Three SAC Champs Nab Railsplitter Of The Week Award

HARROGATE, TN -- The men's golf team, men's tennis team and baseball team have been selected as the Co-Railsplitter of the Week award winners after each of those three programs brought home South Atlantic Conference tournament championships this past week, the Lincoln Memorial University athletic department announced Monday morning. Of the six tournament championships up for grabs this past week, LMU captured three to cap the most successful spring in school history.

The men's golf team set the tone for the week by demolishing the field in the 2013 Food Lion SAC Championship, a three-day, 54-hole event held at Sevierville Golf Club's River Course. Lincoln Memorial got out to a 14-stroke lead after round one and increased their lead every day before finishing with a 33-stroke win over runner-up, Wingate.

The Railsplitters posted a three-day total of 873 (9-over par), which ranks fifth all-time for the lowest score in SAC Championship tournament history, matching their own mark from the 2010 SAC Championship. LMU put three players on the All-Tournament Team with Connor Froning's race to the individual title spearheading that effort. Froning took home SAC Championship Medalist honors after tallying a seven-under par total of 209, including a course record and SAC Championship record eight-under par 64 in round one. Jamie Chapman finished third with a two-over par total, while Rand Wasson came in fifth.

With their second SAC Championship in four seasons, the Railsplitters earned a spot in the 2013 NCAA Division II Southeast/Atlantic Super Regional, which is scheduled for May 5-7.

The men's tennis team followed in the men's golf team's path later in the week, as they defeated fifth-seeded Newberry, top-seeded Anderson and nationally-ranked Wingate (42nd) in consecutive days to earn the title of the 2013 Food Lion SAC Championship.

In the final match, the Railsplitters avenged a 5-4 loss to the Bulldogs in the regular season as well as a 5-1 loss in the 2012 SAC Championship by rallying for a 5-4 win over Wingate to take the crown. Facing a 4-3 deficit with two singles matches yet to be decided, LMU's Gabriel Martins and Guilherme Rocha grinded out three-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to put the Railsplitters at the head of the podium.

Senior Philipp Hoffmann was named SAC Championship Tournament MVP after finishing with a perfect 5-0 mark in three matches. Hoffmann went undefeated with doubles partner Alexey Minevskiy at No. 1 doubles and added two victories at No. 1 singles.

By virtue of their first SAC Championship since the 2010 season, the Railsplitters' earned the league's automatic bid to the 2013 Division II NCAA Tournament. Information regarding that event will be released as soon as details become available.

Lincoln Memorial University's historical showing in the spring championships came to a resounding conclusion on Sunday night, as the baseball team capped a magical run by defeating Carson-Newman, 9-4, in the championship game of the 2013 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference baseball tournament. Freshman Wes Todd delivered the goods, tossing a complete game with only four runs allowed to lead the Railsplitters to victory.

Prior to that contest, the Railsplitters battled some adversity, as they were handed an 8-3 loss to those same Carson-Newman Eagles on Sunday morning, setting up an elimination game against fourth-seeded Newberry. In that game, the Railsplitters came up big in every clutch situation, earning a 12-10 shootout victory over the Wolves to grab a shot a redemption against the Eagles for the SAC Championship.

In that championship, the Railsplitters broke away from the Eagles with a five-run rally in the bottom of the third. From there, Wes Todd closed the door by limiting Carson-Newman to only two hits over the final six innings to crown the Railsplitters with SAC Championship laurels.

Curt Fuqua was named the tournament's MVP after compiling a .381 batting average in five games with a tournament-best eight hits. Among those hits, Fuqua notched a homer, two doubles, four RBI and five runs scored. The remainder of the SAC All-Tournament Team will be announced Monday after the coaches submit their voting.

For the first time in school history, the LMU baseball team will be appearing in the NCAA Tournament, as they earned the league's automatic bid by virtue of their SAC Championship. The selection show for the 2013 NCAA Southeast Regional is scheduled for May 12.
