LMU Baseball Recognizes Five At Athletics Banquet
HARROGATE, TN - On Thursday evening at the University's annual athletics banquet, Lincoln Memorial University Head Baseball Coach Jeff Sziksai recognized five of his players for their contributions to the program this season.
Named 2008-09 Most Valuable Hitter was senior Ralph Rosas (Bayamon, Puerto Rico). Although he has played a number of positions since coming to the Railsplitter program last season, Rosas' primary role this year as been as a designated hitter/outfielder. From these two positions, Rosas has accumulated a .354 batting average while helping the Railsplitters achieve a 30-17 regular season mark with three games remaining on the schedule. As of the date of this article, Rosas has 56 hits, 14 doubles, two triples, six homeruns and 45 RBI.
The 2008-09 Most Improved Player award was presented to sophomore Cody Pack (Andersonville, TN). A pitcher/outfielder, most of Pack's time this season has been spent in centerfield. While he was an important role player for the Railsplitters as a freshman, this season the two-year letter-winner has tallied a .323 batting average with 54 hits, 11 doubles and three triples, while leading the team in homeruns with seven and standing in second place with 43 RBI.
Two players shared the Baseball Coach's Award. Senior Lee Philson (Clinton, SC) and junior Shane Kaufman (Miramar, FL) were co-recipients of this year's award. Philson has been a verbal leader both on and off the field and an inspiration to his teammates, while Kaufman has been a "lead by example" guy, showing both great work ethic, tremendous dedication and hard work and making the most of his opportunities on the field.
LMU's Most Valuable Pitcher award was presented to newcomer Josh Strawn (Bradenton, FL). In only his first season with the Railsplitters, Strawn has posted a 2.35 ERA, while recording a 6-3 record with 13 appearances, seven starts, five complete games, 61.1 innings pitched, seven walks and 64 strikeouts which rank him as one of the top pitchers in the South Atlantic Conference.
The Railsplitters have three games remaining on the 2009 spring schedule and will be in action Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. against Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina with a double-header set for Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
