Early First Half Offensive Barrage Lifts Bulldogs Over Lady Railsplitters

WINGATE, NC - The Wingate University women's basketball team used a 21-2 run in the early minutes of the second half of Saturday's South Atlantic Conference game with the Lady Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University to come away with their first conference win of the year.

After going to the locker room trailing by two 35-33 at the intermission, the Bulldogs tied the game only 21 seconds into the second half and unleashed an offensive attack that was eventually the fatal blow in their 78-69 win over Lincoln Memorial University.

Wingate shot the ball well in Saturday's win, hitting 47.5% from the field on 28-59 shooting.  Reigning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Kurie Washington carried the offensive attack.  Washington hit 5-9 shots from the field and 8-11 shots from the free throw line to finish the game with a team-high 18 points.  Sarah Wollett came off the bench to contribute 13 points, while CC Brooks chipped in 12.

The Lady Railsplitters committed 24 turnovers in their second conference loss of the year and were led by the outside shooting of guards Carolyn Mills and Dayshalee Salaman.  Mills finished with a game-high 24 points on 8-17 shots from the field, including 6-8 3-pointers, while Salaman put in 23 points on 7-15 shooting from the field, hitting two 3-pointers and knocking down 7-8 at the free throw line.

Saturday's win moves the Wingate women to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference standings, while the Lady Railsplitters fall to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in league play.  Wingate travels to Catawba on Wednesday January 6th, while the Lady Railsplitters will play cross-state rival Tusculum College that evening.
