HARROGATE, Tenn. -- As the end of the year approaches, the Lincoln Memorial University athletics department is counting down the top 20 moments of 2015. At No. 9, we look back to the Railsplitter lacrosse program's debut at the LMU Lacrosse Complex, a momentous day that bore the program's inaugural victory.
Â
After dropping a narrow 10-7 decision at Emmanuel in the program's first official match the week before, the Railsplitters returned to Harrogate on February 14 to face the Lees-McRae Bobcats for the debut of collegiate lacrosse on the LMU campus.
Â
On a bitterly cold and windy afternoon, the Railsplitters lit up the scoreboard, racking up 46 shots and 27 shots on goal in a 15-6 shellacking of the Bobcats to pick up their first-ever win.
Â
Lees-McRae took the lead 14 seconds into the match, but Lincoln Memorial scored four unanswered goals after that to build a 4-2 lead at the end of one period. The Railsplitters shut out the Bobcats in the second period to build the lead to 7-2 at the half. The Railsplitters kept their foot on the gas in the second half, pulling away early in the fourth period to secure the nine-goal victory.
Â
Tylor Justin (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the way with four goals, one assist and 10 shots, while
Adam Golia (Victoria, British Columbia),
Jared Courchene (Sagkeeng, Manitoba),
Ronny Paulino and
Jusstin Ruffin (Copiague, N.Y.) each added two goals apiece. The Railsplitters finished with a 32-19 edge in ground ball pickups and won 15 of the 22 face offs. Lincoln Memorial also limited Lees-McRae to just 16 shots and 12 shots on goal.
Â
Lincoln Memorial completed the 2015 campaign with a 4-10 record with wins in three of its last five matches, including a dominant 17-2 pummeling of Asbury in the season finale. Five of the Railsplitters' 10 losses were decided by a single goal.
