HARROGATE, Tenn. -- As the end of the year approaches, the Lincoln Memorial University athletics department is counting down the top 20 moments of 2015. The men's basketball team makes its first appearance in the countdown at No. 8.
Â
It was only February 14th, but thanks to a near-perfect 16-1 start to South Atlantic Conference play, the then No. 5 nationally-ranked Railsplitters hosted the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears at Tex Turner Arena looking to become the first program in league history to win three consecutive outright SAC regular season titles.
Â
Lincoln Memorial accomplished that feat emphatically, too, holding the Bears to 25 percent shooting while connecting on 30 of its 54 shot attempts (55.6 percent) to run away with a 69-37 victory. The Railsplitters allowed just five field goals in the first half en route to surrendering their fewest points since holding OSU-Mansfield to that same point total in November of 2011.
Â
Curtis McMillion (Fayetteville, N.C.) led the Railsplitters with 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting coupled with five rebounds and four blocks, while
Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) piled up 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals on 7-of-10 shooting.
Â
The Railsplitters absolutely dominated the paint in that contest, outscoring the Bears 40-18 inside the square.
Â
The Railsplitters would go on to compile a SAC-record 21 conference victories and win the league by eight games, as Newberry, Queens and Carson-Newman finished in a distant tie for second place at 13-9.
Â
Lincoln Memorial also hosted its annual Play 4Kay game on February 14, raising money and awareness for breast cancer research. LMU has always been among the biggest donors to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in the South Atlantic Conference, but this year was different, as Lincoln Memorial was recognized as the highest fundraiser in all of the NCAA Division II. The Railsplitters were recognized for their fundraising effort at the Wow 4Yow event in Tampa, Florida on April 3.
