HARROGATE, Tenn. – Lincoln Memorial University men's cross country sophomore
Jorge Hernandez(Mount Pleasant, Texas) led the Railsplitters to their best-ever finish in the 2016 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional race this past weekend to earn the Holiday Tire Railsplitter of the Week award for November 8, it was announced on Tuesday morning. Hernandez has now won two of the last three Railsplitter of the Week plaudits after also being tabbed with the department-wide award on October 25.
The Railsplitters wrapped up the 2016 campaign with an eighth-place finish in the 24-team Southeast Regional race while also placing third among the 10 South Atlantic Conference schools in the competition on Saturday morning in Montevallo, Ala. Lincoln Memorial finished with 247 points to edge Anderson by 22 points after the Trojans nipped the Railsplitters for third place in the SAC Championship meet.
The eighth-place finish represented the Railsplitters' highest-ever place in the Southeast Regional race, surpassing the 2012 team's 10th-place run.
Hernandez led that effort by churning out the program's highest-ever individual finish, as the Mount Pleasant, Texas native took 23rd place with a 10k time of 31:42.45 to earn All-Southeast Region merits. Hernandez finished 46 seconds back of Young Harris' Mathew Biwott, who earned the final individual bid to the NCAA Division II National Championship meet.
Hernandez also led the Railsplitters in the SAC Championship meet back on October 22, placing eighth out of 97 competitors to earn All-SAC second team laurels. For that effort, he was also crowned with Holiday Tire Railsplitter of the Week plaudits.
