HARROGATE, Tenn. – Sophomore runner
Jorge Hernandez (Mount Pleasant, Texas) recorded the highest South Atlantic Conference Championship finish by a Lincoln Memorial University runner since 2013 this past weekend and has been recognized as the Holiday Tire Railsplitter of the Week for the week of October 25 for his efforts, it was announced on Tuesday.
A native of Mount Pleasant, Texas, Hernandez led the Railsplitters to a fourth-place finish at the 2016 SAC Championship meet, which was held at Sandhills Research Center in Columbia, S.C. on Saturday morning.
The sophomore racer placed eighth out of 97 competitors with an 8k time of 26:56.3, earning All-SAC second team honors in the process. Hernandez was just .4 seconds shy of Mars Hill's James Gilreath, who elicited the final All-SAC first team spot in seventh place. Hernandez made a 13-spot improvement from his freshman season, when he took 21st place and earned All-SAC honorable mention accolades.
In addition to that, Hernandez's finish represented the highest SAC Championship finish by an LMU men's cross country runner since
Ryan Mecca took seventh place in the 2013 meet.
Hernandez and the Railsplitters will wrap up the 2016 season on November 5, when they compete in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional in Montevallo, Ala.
