HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Lincoln Memorial University sophomore men's golfer
Sam Broadhurst (Nuneaton, England) powered a strong showing for the Railsplitters in the season-opening Kiawah Island Invitational, and has been tabbed as the Holiday Tire Railsplitter of the Week winner for the week of September 20, it was announced on Tuesday.
Among a loaded field featuring several of the nation's best programs, Broadhurst carried Lincoln Memorial to a fourth-place finish in Kiawah Island, S.C. last week, carding an even-par round of 72 in the opening round before closing with a five-under par round of 67 to take sole possession of second place in the 90-player field. Broadhurst fell just two shots back of Limestone's Cabrick Waters in the race for individual medalist honors.
On the wings of Broadhurst's sterling final-round, five-under par 67, the Railsplitters fired a one-under par 287 as a team to leap six spots and finish alone in fourth place at the Kiawah Island Invitational. Lincoln Memorial was a single shot out of third place with a six-over par, 36-hole total of 582.
It marked the sixth top-10 placement in just 12 career events for Broadhurst, who led the Railsplitters in scoring average last season (73.07) and was recognized as the 2015-16 SAC Freshman of the Year. Over the course of 31 career rounds in the Blue and Gray, Broadhurst has shot even par or better 14 times.
The Railsplitters will wrap up the eighth-annual Jay Jennison Cup on Tuesday in Saint Augustine, Fla. After that, Lincoln Memorial heads back east to host the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate October 3-4 at Ocean Ridge Plantation.
