Railsplitters draw with Tusculum in LMU Soccer Complex finale

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters (7-3-3, 4-2-3 SAC) closed out the home portion of the regular-season schedule by earning a 1-1 draw with the Tusculum Pioneers (6-6-2, 3-4-2 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday afternoon at the LMU Soccer Complex. Wednesday's result marked Lincoln Memorial's fifth consecutive match without a loss.

The first 45 minutes of regulation featured a limited number of offensive opportunities as the two teams combined for only nine shots with the Pioneers accumulating a 6-3 edge. The Railsplitters accounted for the only shot on target over that stretch, though, as senior Lucas Coro (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) landed one between the frames in the 11th minute.

The Railsplitters broke the scoring drought in the 55th minute and staked themselves to a 1-0 advantage as defender Nathaniel Johnson (London, England) headed in a perfectly place corner from senior Yuri Passos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The goal was Johnson's second of the season and the third of his career, while Passos posted his team-leading fourth assist on the play.

The Pioneers were unable to land a shot on target in the match until Roberto Pimentel finally accomplished that feat in the 81st minute, but LMU's senior keeper Marcel Barwanietz (Berlin, Germany) stuffed that attempt. Barwanietz was unable to stop Tusculum's second shot on goal as Jonathan Spicher connected on a throw-in by Adam Kulbat to square the match at 1-1 with only 3:23 remaining in regulation.

Neither team would register a shot in the final three minutes of action, sending the match into overtime.

The Railsplitters and Pioneers combined for only four total shots in the two 10-minute overtime periods with Lincoln Memorial holding a slight 3-1 advantage. But, the Pioneers registered the lone shot on target, calling Barwanietz to action in the 105th minute.

The Railsplitters completed the match with 12-9 edge on shot attempts. Passos paced the Railsplitters with four shots while Yinka Lawal (Bromley, England) was credited with three shots.

The match was a physical battle from start to finish as the two teams were whistled for 42 combined fouls. Four yellow cards were issued over the 120 minute span.

The Railsplitters return to the pitch on Saturday, October 25 for an 8 p.m. South Atlantic Conference match against Catawba in Salisbury, N.C., which kicks off a three-game road trip to complete the regular-season schedule.
