Railsplitters play Carson-Newman to a 2-2 tie

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters (5-3-2, 2-2-2 SAC) and Carson-Newman Eagles (4-4-2, 3-1-2 SAC) played to a 2-2 stalemate in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Thursday evening at McCown Field in Jefferson City, Tenn.

In the 30th all-time match-up between the two in-state rivals, Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman tied for only the third time with Thursday marking the first occurrence since 2006. The Railsplitters moved to 16-11-3 in the series, which dates back to the 1987 campaign.

The Railsplitters and Eagles were locked in a 0-0 tie through 42 minutes of action until a handball in the box set up an LMU penalty kick in the 43rd minute. For the second time in as many games, senior goalkeeper Marcel Barwanietz (Berlin, Germany) was ushered forward to attempt the PK and he finished off that try to prop the Railsplitters to a 1-0 lead. After going 44 straight games without even registering a shot in the Blue and Gray, Barwanietz has collected two goals in his past two games.

LMU's lead held until halftime, but Marius Staalby found Joao Pedro Dowsley in the 55th minute to tie the match at 1-1.

The two teams traded goals over a five-minute stretch at the midway point of the second half to perpetuate the stalemate. LMU's junior striker Pedro Villa (New Braunfels, Texas) briefly provided the Railsplitters with a 2-1 advantage, knocking in a deflection in the 64th minute to tally his fourth goal of the season. But, the Eagles countered in the 69th minute as Sindre Welo was on the receiving end of a pass from Dominik Gronwald inside the box. Welo did the rest, finishing off his fourth goal of the season for the equalizer.

Barwanietz was called to action on three separate occasions in the closing minutes of regulation as the Eagles registered shots on frame in the 70th, 75th and 78th minutes, but the senior keeper stonewalled all three of those attempts.

There were 11 shots combined in the two 10-minute overtime periods as the Railsplitters posted four while the Eagles hoisted seven attempts. Only three of those 11 tries landed on target, but none crossed the goal line as the two teams finished 110 minutes of action in a 2-2 tie.

The Railsplitters were outshot by a slim 22-19 margin in the conference clash. Leonardo da Silva (Itajuba, Brazil) led the way with six total shots and one shot on goal. Villa accumulated three shots with two landing on target. Harry Solomons (Leicester, England) and Yinka Lawal (Bromley, England) combined for four shots and three shots on goal.

In addition to his goal, Barwanietz recorded eight saves and allowed two scores in 110 minutes in net for the Railsplitters. Barwanietz has not recorded eight saves in a single match since the semifinals of the 2013 SAC Championship.

The referee was busy in Thursday's bout as 39 fouls were called and eight cards were issued. LMU's Yuri Passos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was issued two yellow cards in the second half, earning a red card and a disqualification from the contest. Carson-Newman's Rurik Pereira was also flagged with a red card in the match as the Railsplitters were forced to play a man down for just over two minutes. Solomons, Villa and da Silva accounted for the other three LMU yellow cards.

The Railsplitters have less than 48 hours before their next match, traveling to Charlotte, N.C. for a South Atlantic Conference battle against the Queens Royals on Saturday, October 11. First kick between Lincoln Memorial and Queens is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
