WINGATE, N.C. -- The Wingate Bulldogs (11-3-1, 8-2-1 SAC) scored three second-half goals to knock off the Railsplitters (7-5-3, 4-4-3 SAC) 3-0 in the regular-season finale Sunday in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action in Wingate, N.C. Despite Sunday's result, Lincoln Memorial earned the No.7 seed for the SAC Championship, which begins on Tuesday. The Railsplitters are set to square off against second-seeded Mars Hill at 7 p.m. in Mars Hill, N.C.
Â
The Railsplitters and Bulldogs played to a 0-0 tie through 45 minutes of action, but Lincoln Memorial clearly controlled the pace of play in the opening half, producing an 8-4 shot advantage with a 3-2 shots on goal edge. Junior striker
Leonardo da Silva (Itajuba, Brazil) landed two shots on frame while junior
Yinka Lawal (Bromley, England) registered another in the first half, but Bulldog keeper Stephen Banick kept the Railsplitters in check.
Â
It was a disastrous 10-minute stretch in the second half that ultimately doomed the Railsplitters as Wingate poured in three goals from the 51st to the 60th minute to assume command of the match.
Â
Aksel Juul scored the first of two goals in the match in the 51st minute, receiving a lead pass from Shaun Gadsby and lining it into the right-hand corner of the net. Just three minutes later, Juul tossed in his second goal of the match off of a double assist from James Scott and Damian Goana. The Bulldogs capped the three-goal flurry in the 60th minute as Charlie Machell ripped a shot from the top of the box over the outstretch arm of LMU keeper
Marcel Barwanietz (Berlin, Germany).
Â
Things could have been much worse for the Railsplitters if not for the effort of Barwanietz, who made seven stops in the second half alone. The Berlin, Germany native finished the match with a season-high nine saves.
Â
The Bulldogs finished with a 15-12 shot advantage, buoyed by an 11-4 cushion in the second half. Of Wingate's 15 attempts, 12 landed on target, while the Railsplitters were limited to five shots on goal. Da Silva paced Lincoln Memorial with five tries and three shots on goal.
Lucas Coro (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) and
Nick Spielman (Melbourne, Fla.) added a pair of shots apiece.
Â
Lincoln Memorial fell to Wingate for the third consecutive time and the sixth time in the past seven head-to-head encounters with Sunday's loss. The Bulldogs clinched the South Atlantic Conference regular season title with the victory.
Â
The Railsplitters earned the No.7 seed for the South Atlantic Conference Championship, set to get underway with quarterfinal action on Tuesday. Lincoln Memorial drew second-seeded Mars Hill as the Railsplitters and Lions are scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Mars Hill, N.C. The Lions defeated the Railsplitters 2-1 in Mars Hill back on September 24.
