25th-ranked Railsplitters escape Newberry with 2-2 tie

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- A late goal helped the 25th-ranked Railsplitters (4-0-1, 1-0-1 SAC) escape with a 2-2 tie against the Newberry Wolves (2-2-1, 1-0-1 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Saturday in Newberry, S.C.

Lincoln Memorial jumped in front early as senior midfielder Yuri Passos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) registered his first goal of the season just 4:34 into the match. The Railsplitters took their 1-0 lead into the break.

Six minutes into the second half, Newberry evened the match at 1-1 as Davis Bryan flicked in a header for his first goal of the season. The Railsplitters found themselves facing their first deficit of the 2014 campaign ten minutes later as Sterling Wendt struck in the 62nd minute to prop the Wolves in front 2-1.

The Railsplitters got the equalizer in the 76th minute as sophomore George Burne (Carlisle, England) found the back of the net for his first point of the season.

The two teams combined for only three shots in the final 14 minutes and change, but none of those attempts landed on frame, sending the contest into overtime.

The Railsplitters mustered a 5-2 advantage on shots in the two overtime periods, but both teams were kept out of the net over that 20-minute window. LMU senior keeper Marcel Barwanietz (Berlin, Germany) collected three saves and allowed two goals in 110 minutes of action, while his counterpart Nick Lucido picked up four saves over that same span.

Lincoln Memorial finished with a 20-12 shot disparity and a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks. Passos paced the Railsplitters with eight shots, while Yinka Lawal (Bromley, England) posted five attempts and Harry Solomons (Leicester, England) accounted for three shots and two shots on target.

It was a physical contest from the start as eight yellow cards were handed out and 51 total fouls were whistled. Newberry was flagged for 30 of the game's 51 fouls.

The Railsplitters hit the road on Wednesday, September 24 for a 5 p.m. kickoff in Mars Hill, N.C. against the Mars Hill Lions.
