HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Junior midfielder
Henrique Rezek (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil) tallied two goals and assisted on another as the Railsplitters (7-2-1, 4-2-1 SAC) emphatically wiped away the memory of the two matches before with a 5-0 triumph over the Newberry Wolves (1-10, 0-7 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Saturday at the LMU Soccer Complex.
Lincoln Memorial improved to 10-1-1 all-time against the Wolves and turned in its best offensive performance since defeating Brevard 5-1 during the 2012 campaign. The Railsplitters also got back on track after suffering back-to-back, heartbreaking 2-1 losses to Wingate and Carson-Newman.
The Railsplitters dominated the Wolves every which way, putting up a season-high 27 shot attempts while limiting Newberry to just 10 tries. Additionally, the Railsplitters had nine shots on goal and seven corner kicks while the Wolves had three shots on frame and five corners.
LMU's first goal was a beauty as
Lucas Coro (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) sent a long pass from beyond the midfield stripe down the middle of the field for
Danilo da Silva (Campinas, Brazil), who beat Newberry's Brad Dixon to the ball and flipped it over the Wolves keeper for his first goal of the season in the 11th minute.
The Railsplitters extended the lead at the 23:16 mark on the first of five points in the match for Rezek. After carrying some space up the left side of the field, Rezek sent a low cross into the box for
Leonardo da Silva (Itajuba, Brazil), who then chipped it into the right side of the net for his team-leading sixth goal.
Rezek was at the center of the action again in the 38th minute, as he received the ball in open space, turned the corner at the top of the box and blasted it in for the Railsplitters' third goal of the half. It was the first goal of Rezek's season. He would wait just 14 minutes and 50 seconds into the second half to get his second gaol, as he was on the back end of a double assist from
Danilo da Silva and
Raphael Baeta (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) that pushed LMU in front 4-0.
Less than three minutes after checking into the match, freshman
Victor Peres (Brasilia, Brazil) put the finishing touches on the Railsplitters' dominant victory. Peres, who has only made five appearances this season and has a game winner to his credit, intercepted a pass at the midfield in the 75th minute and roped in his second goal of the season from more than 40 yards out.
Saturday's win tied the Railsplitters' largest margin of victory against Newberry. Lincoln Memorial also defeated the Wolves by five goals in a 6-1 win in 2007.
Danilo da Silva and
Leonardo da Silva combined for 11 shots in the match, while
Yinka Lawal (Bromley, England) and
Pedro Villa (New Braunfels, Texas) had three shots apiece.
Pedro Ozi (Sao Paulo, Brazil) improved to 7-2-1 while making one save in almost 65 minutes of action. Freshman
Cole Luby (Hillsboro, Mo.) made his first appearance of the season, registering a save over the final 25 minutes.
Dixon was the keeper of record for Newberry, falling to 0-8 after serving up three goals and making two stops in the first half. Gabe Ward played the second half and also recorded two saves. Dillon Pelton led the Wolves with three shots.
The Railsplitters next travel to Hartsville, S.C. for a South Atlantic Conference battle against the Coker Cobras on Saturday, October 17.
