NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Sophomore striker
Victor Peres (Brasilia, Brazil) converted a penalty-kick attempt in the 94th minute to lift the Railsplitters to a 3-2 win over the Newberry Wolves in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Monday at the Smith Road Complex. That match was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday but was pushed back two days due to Hurricane Matthew.
Â
Lincoln Memorial (7-4, 3-3 SAC) dominated the flow of possession, outshooting Newberry (3-7-1, 1-5-1 SAC) 24-10 with an 8-6 edge in shots on goal, but needed some overtime heroics to put away the pesky Wolves, who fell to 0-4-1 in their last five matches with the loss.
Â
The Railsplitters, who have now won 11 of their 13 all-time meetings against Newberry, took the lead in the 13th minute on a goal by
Danilo da Silva (Campinas, Brazil). Silva's sixth goal of the season was set up by
Henrique Rezek (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil) on an overhead through ball to the right side of the box. It was Rezek's third assist of the season.
Â
It took less than five minutes for the Wolves to get the equalizer, though, as Quintin Eisner tallied in the 18th minute to draw the match back even at 1-1.
Â
Lincoln Memorial erased that goal and eventually took a 2-1 lead into the break on a score from
George Burne (Carlisle, England) in the 39th minute. The goal, which was Burne's fourth in the past two matches, was assisted on by
Felipe de Sousa (Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil).
Â
The Railsplitters outshot the Wolves 13-6 in the first half.
Â
Lincoln Memorial clung to that 2-1 lead deep into the second half until Newberry pulled back even once again in the 76th minute off of a free kick from Fabrizio Bucco, which clanged off the crossbar before dropping mere inches across the line.
Â
Despite putting immense pressure on the Newberry defense down the stretch, the Railsplitters were unable to put in the game-winner in regulation, sending the match into overtime.
Â
The Railsplitters needed less than four minutes of extra time to notch the victory, however, as Newberry's Nolan Hendrix was flagged with a yellow card on a foul in the box at the 93:58 mark. Peres took advantage of that opportunity and netted his third goal of the season on the subsequent penalty kick to give Lincoln Memorial the win.
Â
It marked Lincoln Memorial's first overtime winner since September 19, 2015, when the Railsplitters knocked off Queens in overtime.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper
August Ahlin (Stockholm, Sweden) made four saves to pick up his seventh win of the season and help the Railsplitters snap a two-game SAC winning streak.
Â
The Railsplitters are back in action on Saturday, October 15 when they welcome the Coker Cobras to the LMU Soccer Complex for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. Live stats and video links will be available at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
