Peres, Ahlin lead Railsplitters to 1-0 win at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Freshman goalkeeper August Ahlin (Stockholm, Sweden) made a career-high eight saves and sophomore striker Victor Peres (Brasilia, Brazil) scored in his fifth consecutive match as the Railsplitters (10-5, 6-4 SAC) blanked the Carson-Newman Eagles (7-9, 3-7 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Tuesday night in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Lincoln Memorial won for the fifth time in its last six appearances on the pitch to move into a tie for fourth place in the SAC standings with one match left in the regular season. The top four teams in the final SAC standings host their quarterfinal-round match of the SAC tournament.

The win also snapped a recent drought against the Eagles, who won last season's meeting at the LMU Soccer Complex 2-1.

Carson-Newman outshot the Railsplitters 19-17, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal, and also mustered a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks attempted, but Lincoln Memorial was the only team able to break into the scoring column.

Peres was responsible for the lone goal of the match, as the sophomore forward knocked in a free kick in the 28th minute to stake the Railsplitters to a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish. That goal increased Peres' season total to seven and extended his streak of consecutive matches with a goal to five dating back to October 10.

The Railsplitters outshot the Eagles 11-9 in the first half, but Carson-Newman brought the heat in the second half, ripping off 10 shots, including five shots on goal. However, Ahlin stopped all five of those second-half shots on goal to finish with a career-high eight saves, topping his previous career-high of six.

Ahlin made three saves in the final nine minutes of regulation, including the potential equalizer as time expired, to post his third shutout of the season.

Peres led the Railsplitters with six shots and three shots on goal, while Danilo da Silva (Campinas, Brazil) had four shots and a shot on frame. Andres Pratto (Buenos Aires, Argentina) added three shots with a shot on goal.

The Railsplitters wrap up the regular season and look to clinch a top-four SAC finish on Friday, October 28, as they travel to Salisbury, N.C. to face the Catawba Indians at 5:30 p.m. Live stats and video links are available at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
