Railsplitters knock off Catawba 2-1 to advance to SAC Championship semifinals

No. 5 LMU plays No. 8 Brevard at 5 p.m. on Friday in Rock Hill, S.C.

SALISBURY, N.C. -- The fifth-seeded Railsplitters (11-6) rallied for a 2-1 win over the fourth-seed Catawba Indians (10-7) in the quarterfinals of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Championship on Tuesday night in Salisbury, N.C.

With the win, Lincoln Memorial advances to the semifinal round to face the eighth-seeded Brevard Tornados, who handed No. 1 nationally-ranked Wingate its first loss of the season on Tuesday night. That match is scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m. at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Railsplitters and Indians played just three days ago in the regular-season finale, which Catawba won 2-1 on a last-minute goal to clinch home-field advantage for Tuesday's SAC Championship quarterfinal contest. That familiarity proved beneficial for Lincoln Memorial, who returned the favor with 2-1 victory when it mattered the most.

It was Catawba that struck first, though, as the Indians took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Daniele Proch in the ninth minute.

The Railsplitters put two shots on goal over the next stretch, but were unable to get the equalizer until a Catawba player was called for a foul in the box in the 30th minute, setting up a penalty kick for sophomore Victor Peres (Brasilia, Brazil). Peres converted that chance to even the score at 1-1 and tally his team-leading eighth goal of the season. In addition to that, Peres extended his point streak to eight games.

Lincoln Memorial outshot the Indians 7-3 in the first half, but the score would remain tied at 1-1 after 45 minutes of action.

The Railsplitters didn't need much time to take the lead in the second half, as senior striker George Burne (Carlisle, England) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal off of a Danilo da Silva (Campinas, Brazil) assist in the 58th minute. The goal was Burne's seventh of the season, while the assist was Silva's seventh.

Catawba's Tim Frederik-Lange put shots on goal in the 73rd and 79th minutes, but freshman goalkeeper August Ahlin (Stockholm, Sweden) stopped both of those attempts to preserve the Railsplitters' 2-1 win. Ahlin finished the match with three saves to notch his 11th win of the season.

The Railsplitters outshot the Indians 19-7 with a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Peres and Burne paced Lincoln Memorial with four shots and two shots on frame apiece, while three other players produced two shots apiece. LMU also had the edge in corner-kick attempts with eight to the Indians' six.

With the win, Lincoln Memorial remained perfect all-time against Catawba in postseason play, building off of SAC tournament victories in 2007 and 2012. In addition to that, the Railsplitters are heading to the SAC Championship semifinals for the fourth time in the past five seasons.

The Railsplitters are set to face the eight-seeded Brevard Tornados in SAC Championship semifinal round action on Friday at 5 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C. The winner advances to the title game, which is set for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Sunday.
