CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Queens Royals scored a golden goal early in overtime to hand the Railsplitters a 2-1 loss in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Saturday evening in Charlotte, N.C.
Lincoln Memorial (4-2, 1-1 SAC) and Queens (4-2, 1-1 SAC) were deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes of action, but the Royals earned the sudden victory less than two minutes into the overtime period to drop the Railsplitters back even in SAC play and snap their four-match winning streak.
Edmundo Robinson tallied the game-winning goal just 1:23 into the first overtime, heading in a corner kick from Corey Brown to give the Royals their first win over the Railsplitters since a 4-1 victory in the semifinals of the 2013 SAC Championship.
Robinson's goal came shortly after Lincoln Memorial and Queens completed a scoreless second half of action, as both of the goals in regulation were tallied in the first half.
Queens struck first in the match, as Alberto Morales recovered a deflection in the attacking third and blasted it past LMU keeper
August Ahlin (Stockholm, Sweden) to stake the Royals to a 1-0 lead.
The score held at 1-0 in favor of Queens until the closing seconds of the first half, when
Danilo da Silva (Campinas, Brazil) sent a ball into the box for
Andres Pratto (Buenos Aires, Argentina), who headed it home with just 10 seconds left in the period to draw the match even at 1-1. The goal was Pratto's first of his tenure in the Blue and Gray, while da Silva, the reigning AstroTurf SAC Player of the Week, extended his point streak to five games with his third assist of the year.
The two teams remained knotted up through the final 45 minutes of regulation despite combining for 12 shots in the second half. Queens accounted for eight of those attempts, but Ahlin made five of his career-high six saves in the second half to keep the Royals off the board.
For the match, Queens outshot the Railsplitters 17-15 and mustered an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. The Royals also accounted for an 8-3 advantage in corner-kick attempts, including the only one in overtime, which set up the game-winning score.
Queens' Sergio Lemus improved to 4-2 after allowing just one goal and making five saves, while Ahlin falls to 4-2 after giving up two goals with six saves.
The loss drops the Railsplitters to 3-5 all-time against Queens and 2-2 on the road in the series.
Lincoln Memorial will try to bounce back on Wednesday, September 21, when they welcome the rival Tusculum Pioneers to the LMU Soccer Complex for a SAC battle set to get underway at 3:30 p.m. Live stats and video links will be available at www.LMURailsplitters.com.Â
