Railsplitters close out 2016-17 season with 13th-place finish at South/Southeast Regional

The 13th-place run is the highest in regional play in program history

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The Lincoln Memorial University men's golf team closed out the 2016-17 season by firing a one-under par 287 in the final round of the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional on Wednesday at the Fighting Joe course at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Muscle Shoals. By posting the fourth-lowest round of the day and the lowest NCAA Tournament round in program history, the Railsplitters moved up five spots to finish the 20-team, 54-hole event in 13th place, which is their highest ever finish in that event.

The Railsplitters ended the tournament with a three-day, 25-over par total of 889 to finish above 18th place for the first time in four appearances in the South/Southeast Regional. Lincoln Memorial fell just six strokes out of the seventh and final qualifying spot for the NCAA Finals, an effort that was ultimately derailed by an opening-round 18-over par 306. Lincoln Memorial also topped three top-10 ranked teams in No. 4 Nova Southeastern, No. 6 Lander and No. 8 Lander.

No. 1 nationally-ranked West Florida ran away with the South/Southeast Regional title, carding a 21-under par total of 843 to finish 11 shots clear of the rest of the field. Florida Southern (-10) and Lynn (-5) also ended up under par after 54 holes, while Florida Tech, Barry, Newberry and North Alabama earned the final qualifying spots to the national finals.

Sophomore Sam Broadhurst and freshman Harry Boyle ended the event tied for 11th place with even-par totals of 216. The 11th-place run marks far and away the highest individual finish for an LMU men's golfer in the NCAA Tournament in program history, while the 216 cumulative score is also the lowest 54-hole total in that event.

Broadhurst shot a one-over par 73 on Wednesday, an effort that was aided by a birdie on the par-4 16th hole. Boyle logged an even-par 72 that included a pair of birdies on the front nine.

After struggling mightily through the first two rounds with an 83 and a 78, senior George Duncan closed out his illustrious career with the Railsplitters by firing a four-under par 68 to match the low round of his career. Duncan, who will leave LMU ranked fifth in career scoring average in program history, recorded eight birdies with five coming on the outward nine. Duncan finished tied for 78th place.

Freshman Brady Davis shot a two-over par 74 to finish tied for 85th place, while Tyler Harvey shot a seven-over par 79 to finish alone in 101st place.

The Railsplitters end the 2016-17 campaign with a program-record five tournament victories. With a team comprised of three freshmen, one sophomore and one senior, Lincoln Memorial also reset the single-season record for four-player scoring average.
