Bears rally to steal one away from men's soccer

HICKORY, N.C. — It was a tough one to swallow.

After the Lincoln Memorial University men's soccer team scored two second-half goals to take the lead late into the final 45 minutes, Lenoir-Rhyne answered.

The Bears netted two scores in the last five minutes — Florian Simon's second penalty kick in the 86th minute and Ignacio de Goya's 88th-minute long free kick — to snap the Railsplitters' three-game winning streak in a 3-2 South Atlantic Conference decision at the Moretz Athletic Complex Saturday night.

LR (7-4, 6-2 SAC) struck first in the 36th minute when Simon netted his first PK, but the Railsplitters (6-3-2, 3-2-1) didn't let that lead stick for too long.

It was Victor Peres who netted through the equalizer in the 63rd minute off a free kick just outside the penalty box. The senior's eighth goal of the season went up and over a wall in the box and into the netting to knot the score.

Matteo Bufalo scored a goal for the second consecutive match when he put through what looked like the winning goal in the 82nd minute, but the Bears shut down the Railsplitters' second-half comeback with one of their own.

LMU outshot the Bears 10 to 14 and held the advantage in corner kicks with five compared to LR's four, but the Railsplitters' 26 fouls called to the Bears' 19 hurt them as two PKs resulted from it.
