MARS HILL, N.C. — There was no stopping the Railsplitters.
From start to finish, the Lincoln Memorial University men's soccer team was in control and it showed in a South Atlantic Conference, 2-0, victory at Mars Hill Wednesday night.
Edwin Vaas put the Railsplitters (4-2-2, 2-1-1 SAC) on the board first in the 39th minute, when the graduate transfer took
Victor Peres' second assist of the season for the go-ahead lead and his first score.
It was an advantage LMU would never lose.
The Railsplitters held a 14 to 2 shot ratio in the first half, with six on goal compared to the Lions' one. That success continued as LMU took eight more shots in the second half while Mars Hill (5-4, 2-3) took six.
LMU goalkeeper
Caleb Cothrin was his normal self, corralling four saves — three key ones coming in the last 45 minutes — to give him three clean sheets on the year.
Along with Vaas' first connection in an LMU uniform,
Rodrigo Aguiar joined him with four seconds remaining on the clock, sprinting for the breakaway goal via a pass from
Miguel Reis to put the finishing touches on a big-time SAC victory.
The Railsplitters will be back in action when Wingate travels to the LMU Soccer Complex for a 3:30 p.m. kick-off Saturday.
