ANDERSON, S.C. — The Lincoln Memorial University men's soccer team stepped down on the gas pedal with more urgency after Anderson's Colin Burris' 35-yard shot swooped through the left corner of the net for the go-ahead lead in the 81st minute.
The No. 5-seeded Railsplitters (8-4-4) responded with multiple counter attacks in the last nine minutes, but were unable to find pay dirt as they fell, 2-1, to No. 4-seeded Anderson (9-4-3) in the SAC Championship Quarterfinal at Trojan Stadium Tuesday night.
LMU will now wait for conference tournaments to finish this weekend to determine its season's fate for when the NCAA Tournament selections are announced.
The Railsplitters struck first in the 22nd minute when
Miguel Reis shot a ball upfield, which bounced off
Victor Peres before
Danilo Seglio corralled it and pushed it in for his second goal of the season.
Anderson responded in the next seven minutes as Burris secured his first goal of the evening via a header from a Birkir Petursson free kick, making it a 1-1 match.
The tie lasted all the way until the final stretch when Burris' second score went over the top of all the players — plus out of the reach of LMU goalkeeper
Caleb Cothrin — and into the top, left corner, which proved to be the game-winner to advance the Trojans into the SAC Championship quarterfinals.
The Railsplitters edged a 10-to-9 shot advantage in the first half, while Anderson reversed roles, taking six shots in the second half to LMU's four. The Trojans had eight shots on goals to the Railsplitters' 10.
