NEWBERRY, S.C. – LMU senior
Joshua Peress became the second player in program history to amass 60 singles wins for his career as he led LMU with wins in both singles and doubles as they 6-3 upset 35th-ranked Newberry Friday afternoon at the Oakland Tennis Center.
The Montreal native joins former SAC Player of the Year Philipp Hoffmann as the only players with 60 or more singles wins in their career in the Blue and Gray. Hoffmann went 70-6 from 2010-13 while Peress currently stands at 60-14. Peress is also currently tied for fourth in career doubles wins with Will Sparks (2012-15) as both have 53 career victories at doubles.
The Railsplitters swept all three doubles matches to take a crucial 3-0 lead into singles play.
Xavier Marti and
Constantin Ernstberger got the ball rolling as they defeated Jose Navarro and Alex Amble 8-3 at the no. 3 flight.
Jake Tuchmann and
Moritz Hoerner then picked up the 8-4 win at no. 1 over Edison Ambarzumjan and Jordan Monosky. Peress and
David Segarra made the score 3-0 as they improved to 12-4 overall and 5-1 in SAC play with their 8-4 win over Nikhil Mannepali and Angel Pizarro at no. 2.
Navarro put the Wolves on the board as he handed Ernstberger his first loss in SAC play this season with the 6-4, 6-4 win at no. 2. Peress then picked up the historic win and, more importantly, moved LMU to 4-1 for the match with his 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 win over Ambarzumjan at no. 1. Peress is now 13-4 on the year.
Monosky defeated LMU's
Iker Tomas Moure in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, at the no. 5 flight and Mannepali won over Marti 7-5, 6-4 at no. 3 to make the match score 4-3 in favor of LMU with two flights remaining.
Hoerner then delivered the match to the Railsplitters as he defeated Amble at no. 6 6-3, 6-2 to make the score 5-3, LMU. Segarra then improved to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in SAC play as he picked up the 2-6, 6-2, 10-7 won over Pizarro at the no. 4 flight.
LMU is now 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 17-5 and 4-2 in SAC play. The Railsplitters will host Anderson Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the LMU Tennis Complex.
