NEWBERRY, S.C. – 45th-ranked Newberry picked up two wins at doubles and four at singles as they outlasted the Lady Railsplitter tennis team 6-3 Friday afternoon at the Oakland Tennis Center.
LMU falls to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in SAC play, while Newberry improves to 18-4 and 5-1 in the SAC.
All of the doubles flights were decided by two points or less. At no. 1, Amanda Carillo and Marta Gomar defeated LMU's
Marta Pinol and
Angelica Solano 8-6 and at the no. 2 spot
Julia Loos and
Johanna Delisse fell to Elisa Aguirre and Lucia Davila 8-7. The Lady Railsplitters picked up their first win of the match when
Julia Valls and
Kristin Vogel won over Rebeca Martinez and Joelle Husle 8-7.
In singles, Vogel fell to Aguirre 6-3, 6-1 at no. 2, followed by Gomar defeating Loos 6-0, 7-6 at the no. 3 flight. Newberry then picked up the match-deciding point when Pinol fell to Carillo at no. 1 7-5, 6-4.
Valls and Davila went to three sets at the no. 4 flight before Davila put the Wolves ahead 6-1 with her 2-6, 6-3 10-2 win. Zellner picked up LMU's second win as she defeated Martinez 6-1, 6-2 at the no. 5 spot while Solano defeated Husle 8-2 at no. 6.
LMU will host Anderson Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the LMU Tennis Complex.
