NEWBERRY, S.C. – The LMU women's tennis team saw their season end Tuesday afternoon as they rallied back from a 4-2 deficit to tie the match, only to fall in the final flight in three sets in a 5-4 loss at 37
th-ranked Newberry in the quarterfinal round of the SAC Tennis Championships.
The Wolves jumped out to the early 2-1 lead in doubles, as Amanda Carillo and Marta Gomar defeated
Angelica Solano and
Marta Pinol 8-2 at flight no. 1, and Elisa Aguirre and Lucia Davila won over
Julia Loos and
Johanna Delisse at no. 2 by an 8-3 margin.
LMU picked up the point at no. 3 when
Julia Valls and
Kristin Vogel bested Rebeca Martinez and Joelle Huelse 8-3.
In singles, Newberry's Aguirre won over Pinol 6-1, 6-3 at no. 2.
Valls then cut the lead to 3-2 with her 6-2, 6-3 win at no. 4.
The Wolves then went up 4-2 with Carillo's 6-2, 6-1 win over Vogel at no. 1.
Loos gave LMU a point when she cruised past Gomar at no. 3 by scores of 6-1, 6-0, and then
Julia Zellner tied the match at 4-4 with her 6-2, 6-2 win over Rebeca Martinez at no. 5.
With the score tied, the match came down to the no. 6 flight between LMU's
Angelica Solano and Newberry's Joelle Huelse. The winner (and her team) moves on to the semifinals on Saturday and the non-winner's season is over. Huelse won the first set 6-2, but Solano battled back to take the second set by a 7-6 score. Solano kept it close but in the end Huelse edged her out by a 6-4 margin, giving Newberry the 5-4 match victory.
With the loss, LMU's season comes to an end. They finish with a 13-7 overall record and a 6-4 record in SAC play.
The loss also ends the careers of seniors
Angelica Solano,
Javiera Gonzalez and
Julia Zellner.
Zellner, a one year transfer, ends her LMU career with a 17-3 overall record. The 17 wins in a season ties her for fifth-most in a season in program history.
Gonzalez finishes her LMU career with a 19-22 record in singles and a 14-17 record in doubles.
Solano, the lone four-year senior on this year's roster, finishes her career with a 51-23 record in singles play and a 16-33 record in doubles. This season she went 16-6 in singles and 10-11 in doubles. Her 16 wins this season in singles ties her for 11
th-best and her 51 wins are the sixth-most in school history.
