HARROGATE, Tenn. – The 29
th ranked Railsplitter men's tennis team saw their season come to an end Wednesday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Complex as 35
th ranked Tusculum eked out the 5-3 win to advance to the SAC Tournament semifinals.
LMU ends their season at 12-7 while the Pioneers are now 15-7.
Tusculum took the early 2-1 lead with a pair of wins in doubles. At no. 1, Toby de Klerk and Yago Fernandez won over
Jake Tuchmann and
Moritz Hoerner 8-2 and Gabriel Yaguar and Jorge Cervantes picked up the 8-2 win over
Xavier Marti and
Constantin Ernstberger at no. 3.
The Railsplitters earned their first point when
Joshua Peress and
David Segarra got the 8-5 win over TC's Marco Meon and Eduardo Munoz at no. 2.
LMU picked up two more wins at no. 1 and no. 2 singles when Peress defeated Meon 6-1, 6-2 at no. 1 and Ernstberger won 7-6, 6-1 over Kmetko at no. 2.
TC won the match with three victories in the bottom three flights. Cervantes defeated Segarra 6-4, 6-3 at no. 4, Yaguar won over
Iker Tomas Moure 6-2, 6-4 at no. 5, and David Ankinpetide bested Hoerner 6-2, 6-0 at no. 6.
Due to the postseason rules stating that play stops once the match is won,
Xavier Marti's match with Yago Fernandez at no. 3 was not finished.
???????Tusculum moves on to face Wingate in the semifinal round. The Bulldogs defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 5-0 earlier today.
The loss ends the career of LMU seniors
Carlos Zunino and
Joshua Peress.
Zunino ends his career with a 15-14 singles record and a 10-19 record in doubles.
Peress will go down as one of the best-ever to wear the Blue and Gray as he finishes his career with a 64-16 singles and 59-22 doubles record. He was also named first-team All-SAC earlier today, the first first-teamer at LMU since 2013. Peress' 64 wins rank him second all-time in career wins, while his .800 winning percentage is the fifth-best in program history. In doubles, his 59 wins tie him for fourth and his .728 percentage is the seventh-best.
