BRISTOL, Tenn. — Victor Peres has slowly but surely worked himself back into the Railsplitter rotation.
The senior gave his Lincoln Memorial University men's soccer coaches even more reason to give him more minutes on Wednesday afternoon after he extended, heading in an assist from
Felipe de Sousa in the 105th minute for the double-overtime, 2-1, game-winning goal over King University.
It was the preseason All-SAC second-team member's first score of the season, as it was de Sousa's first assist.
De Sousa's pass to Peres, who entered in the second half before playing both overtime periods, was in the perfect position for his teammate to make a play on it. It was de Sousa who put LMU (2-1-1) on the board first when he took a free kick, to the left of the box, himself and placed it out of reach of the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
The Railsplitters carried a convincing 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Tornado (1-3-1) placed the equalizer into the left of the net at the 52nd-minute mark. Jalen Willis pushed the assist through the LMU defense to Ben Delisle for his second score of the year, knotting it at 1 to eventually force overtime.
LMU out-paced King by a large margin, outshooting the Tornado 25-5 while nine of those were on goal for the Railsplitters compared to King's one. LMU also had 10 corner kicks to just two from the Tornado.
The Railsplitters' victory gave them a 6-4-1 series lead, holding a 5-0-1 record in the last six meetings versus King.
LMU's first South Atlantic Conference matchup Saturday at Queens was postponed due to the inclement weather expected from Hurricane Florence's path. The make-up date hasn't been released yet, but the Railsplitters are set to start SAC play when Carson-Newman comes to town a week from today.
