CHARLOTTE, N.C. – 20th-ranked Queens ended LMU's season Tuesday afternoon with their 4-1 victory in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
Queens advances to play Wingate in the semifinals Thursday afternoon.
LMU won the third doubles spot as
Kristin Vogel and
Samantha Hogan defeated QUC's Hannah Lehfeldt and Caity Klaassen 6-1. The Royals too the match doubles point with the win in the first flight by 10th-ranked Sasha Davidzenka and Yana Fleyer's 6-1 win over
Johanna Delisse and
Kiersten Waugh; and the 6-3 win in the second spot by Isabel Fornies and Viktorija Veselinova over
Julia Loos and
Julia Valls.
Due to the tournament format, once a team reaches four points the match is over, so only four of the singles flights were finished. Veselinova put QUC ahead 2-0 with Veselinova's 6-2, 6-2 win over Loos in the fourth flight. Lehfeldt then defeated
Amanda Dahlstrom 6-2, 6-4 in the sixth flight.
Vogel picked up a point for LMU with her 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win over Klaassen in the sixth spot, but soon afterward the Royals won the match as 67th-ranked Fleyer defeated Delisse 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 6-0 in the first flight.
The loss ends LMU's season at 11-9.
The Lady Railsplitters only have one senior on their roster,
Marta Pinol, and will have a strong nucleus for next year's squad returning. Pinol ends her career with a singles record of 54-26 and a doubles record of 30-26. Her 54 singles wins tie her for fifth all-time with Lori Hillman-Stanley (1992-96).
Valls ends the season ranked 12th in career singles victories with 49, 18 wins out of the program record of 60, held by Helena Sokolova (2003-07).
Loos currently is tied for 25th with Dera Wood (1998-01) in singles and ranks 14th in doubles with Melanie Smith (2008-12).
