DANIELS, W.V. – The Railsplitters had to fight tooth and nail but earned their way into the match play portion of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship for the second consecutive season with a final-round, five-over par 293 on Wednesday afternoon at The Resort at Glade Springs. Lincoln Memorial finished in eighth place – the final qualifying spot for match play – with a 10-over par, 54-hole total of 874.
That score was just good enough to move on to the national quarterfinals, as Dixie State finished in ninth place at 11-over par, while Missouri-St. Louis took 10th place at 13-over par. Grand Valley State also finished just seven shots back of the Railsplitters.
With its eighth-place qualifying position, Lincoln Memorial will square off against No. 1 nationally-ranked Barry in the national quarterfinals on Thursday morning. The Bucs ran away with the top spot in qualifying, finishing at 18-under par to top second-place Lynn by seven shots. The winner of the match between LMU and Barry advances to the national semifinals to face the winner between Trevecca Nazarene and Florida Southern on Thursday afternoon.
Nobody went particularly low for the Railsplitters in the final round, but there was enough balance across the board to sneak them into match play.
Luke Harries had his best round of the tournament to lead the charge for Lincoln Memorial, posting an even-par 72, while
Dan Bradbury and
Hamish McColm finished with one-over par 73s.
Sam Broadhurst rounded out the qualifying scores for the Railsplitters with a three-over par 75, while
Harry Boyle closed out the day with an 80.
Broadhurst entered the day in sole possession of first place, but stumbled a bit to settle for a tie for sixth place. He made birdies on his third and seventh holes of the day to get to one-under par, but made a bogey at No. 17 and a double at No. 18 to close out his opening nine. He then dropped another shot at the par-four first hole to slip to three-over par. Broadhurst got it back to one over with birdies at No. 4 and No. 6 before recording bogeys on his last two holes of the day.
Harries ended up tying for 44th place by virtue of his closing round of 72. The sophomore dropped in consecutive birdies at Nos. 15 and 16 to turn at even par and got as low as two-under par with an eagle three at No. 2. However, Harries dropped shots at Nos. 4 and 5 to fall back level.
Bradbury, who ended up tying for 57th place, had a hard time out of the gate, making bogeys at holes 10, 13, 15 and 16 to fall to four-over par. However, the All-SAC first team selection turned things around over the final 11 holes with three birdies and eight pars.
McColm had another solid day for the Railsplitters as the freshman started his round with six straight pars before dropping a shot at No. 16. He got that back with a birdie at the 18th to close out his front side. After an eventful start to the back nine that included a bogey at the first, a birdie at the second and a bogey at the third, McColm made three straight pars before making a bogey at seven and a birdie on his final hole of the day. He finished tied for 73rd place.
Boyle finished tied for 75th place following his eight-over par 80. The junior failed to make a birdie during his final round and was undone by a string of three straight bogeys and a double through his first six holes of the back nine.
The matchups are set for the national semifinals match between Lincoln Memorial and Barry, which gets going at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. Bradbury will battle Niclas Weiland, Harries will take on Tyler Bakich, Boyle will face Conor Richards, McColm stares down Daniel Faccini, and Broadhurst faces Jorge Garcia in a matchup between two first-team All-Americans.
The format is medal matches with each match being decided by lowest cumulative score. The first to win three matches will advance to the national semifinals. Live results are
