NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP BOUND! Railsplitters defeat Florida Southern to advance to title match

5/23/2019 9:42:00 PM

DANIELS, W.V. – For the first time in program history, the Lincoln Memorial men's golf team is heading to the national championship match.

After pulling off a 3-2 upset win over No. 1 nationally-ranked Barry on Thursday morning, the Railsplitters carried that momentum into the afternoon to upend Florida Southern by that same score to book a spot in the title match of the 2019 Division II Men's Golf Championship at The Resort at Glade Springs.

Lincoln Memorial, which became the first men's golf team in South Atlantic Conference history to advance to the national semifinals with its win over Barry, will become only the third program in school history to compete in the national championship when it takes on defending champions Lynn at 9 a.m. on Friday morning.

The men's basketball team made a trip to the national championship in 2016, while the men's soccer program made the department's first-ever national championship appearance in 2007.

It was a close match throughout, but the Railsplitters were able to finish off the Moccasins down the stretch with some clutch play from Dan Bradbury, Luke Harries and Hamish McColm, who accounted for the three LMU points.

Bradbury got off to a hot start at the front of the pack for the Railsplitters, making birdie on three of his first four holes to establish a commanding four-shot lead. However, Max Coutsolioutsos battled all the way back to close the gap to one heading into the 18th hole. But Bradbury never relinquished the lead, making par to Coutsolioutsos' bogey to put the first point in the bag for the Railsplitters.

After Sam Broadhurst uncharacteristically stumbled late in his match against Michael VanDerLaan, giving up a three-shot lead after 10 holes to suffer a three-shot loss, Harries got the Railsplitters back on the right foot with a clutch closing stretch. With his match tied against Johnny Tucker, the sophomore banged home a 30-footer for par at the 16th hole to take a one-shot lead. He then buried a birdie putt on the 18th to wrap up the two-shot victory.

McColm, who also notched a point against Barry, brought it home for the Railsplitters after Harries' win. With his match against senior Christian Anderson all square after 11 holes, McColm made a birdie at 12 to take the lead for good. After that, he went par, par, birdie, par, par over the next five holes to pull ahead by four shots. The freshman coasted up the 18th hole, clinching the three-shot win with a tap-in for bogey.

The national championship match against Lynn kicks off at 9 a.m. on Friday with Bradbury leading the pack against Tomas Gana. Broadhurst will be following against Agustin Errazuriz, which precedes Harries' match against Carlos Bustos. The last two matches will be Boyle vs. Giovanni Manzoni and McColm vs. Jorge Villar.
