HARROGATE, Tenn. - In their first match in three weeks, the Lincoln Memorial University women's tennis team (1-1) fell to Lindsey Wilson College by a score of 5-2 at the Indoor Tennis Facility Sunday afternoon. The match was the team's final tune-up before South Atlantic Conference play begins.
LMU began the match on a high note by winning the doubles point as
Samantha Hogan and
Kristin Vogel won 6-2 at number two doubles and
Mae Fitzgerald and
Johanna Delisse defeated their opponents 6-4 at number three. Those victories gave the Lady Railsplitters a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
"I was very pleased with how we played in doubles," head coach
Marc Walters said. "Since we haven't played in three weeks, it was nice to be back in a competitive environment."
In singles, however, LMU was never able to get going as their lone victory was by Fitzgerald in the number five position. She won by a score of 3-6, 6-0, 1-0.
Julia Valls fell 7-5, 6-4 in a tight match at number one while Vogel was defeated 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 at number two. Delisse lost 6-3, 6-4 at number three,
Amanda Dahlstrom fell 6-4, 7-5 in another close match at number four and
Claudia Rodriguez battled hard in the number six spot but eventually succumbed by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0.
"The girls played at a fairly high level, but we were unable to close out leads," Walters commented. "We put ourselves in excellent position, but got out-toughed throughout at crucial moments. Credit to Lindsey Wilson for coming on the road and playing well without much preparation."
The team will now turn their attention toward conference play, which begins on the road at Limestone on Tuesday, Mar. 2. The match is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
