HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Looking to continue their respective seasons in postseason play, the Lincoln Memorial University men's and women's tennis teams bowed out in the 2021 South Atlantic Conference Championship quarterfinals Thursday. With the losses, the men finish 7-10 while the women are 6-7 overall.
Facing third-seeded Tusculum, the LMU men lost at number two and three doubles to go down 1-0 early. Due to the championship rules, play was stopped as soon as a team clinched the point, so the all-conference duo of
Iker Moure and
Jake Tuchmann competed in an unfinished match.
In singles, the Pioneers won at numbers one, two, and six to clinch the match and take the 4-0 victory. Once again Tuchmann competed in an unfinished match, as did
Sebastian Colla and
Thom Hermans, the latter of whom was leading when play was called.
Taking on the top seed Wingate, LMU's women also ran into a similar situation as they lost at number two and three doubles.
Valentina Ascarrunz and
Johanna Delisse were tied 5-5 at the number one position when play was finalized.
In singles, the Bulldogs took control and finished the match with victories at number one, number two, and number five. Second team all-conference selection
Valentina Ascarrunz was leading the 2021 SAC Freshman of the Year and was in position to win when the match was called, while
Kristin Vogel and
Mae Fitzgerald were also still competing.
With the defeats, both programs end their season and look forward to year three of the
Marc Walters era.
