Field hockey finishes season in conference quarterfinal

Greenwood, SC - "All good things must come to an end, but the memories last forever" -- a phrase that carries strong meaning for the Lincoln Memorial field hockey team after falling to Lander in the South Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday night. Although the sting of the quarterfinal result will linger for a while, the Railsplitters ended the season with the best season in the young program's history; breaking numerous team, program, and individual records. Tuesday's postseason game was also a first for the young program. Two Lincoln Memorial players have been there from the beginning, and have helped guide the elevation of the program. Brooke Foster and Olivia Rosini walked off the field for the final time Tuesday night in a Railsplitters uniform. The tandem have left an everlasting mark on the program. Lincoln Memorial knew it would be no easy task traveling to 7th-ranked (3rd-seeded) Lander. The Bearcats maintained a top-10 national ranking nearly all season, however, the Railsplitters refused to be deterred, fighting fervently until the final horn.

It was clear from the first quarter that Lander was going to be on the attack early and often. Out shooting Lincoln Memorial 9-2 in the first period of action, the Railsplitter defense did a tremendous job of keeping the score knotted at 0-0. Goalkeeper Cayla Wiggins, the conference leader in saves, was unstoppable in the opening frame, tallying six saves, facing six penalty corners. With just under seven minutes remaining in the first half, the Bearcats struck first, taking a 1-0 lead. The Railsplitters continued to battle, forcing Lander out of its comfort zone for the majority of the remaining duration of the first half. However, as time expired in the second quarter, the Bearcats connected on another goal to double the score, 2-0. Following a review by the officials, the goal stood, leaving Lander in control 2-0 at the halftime break.

It was clear than neither team had any intention of slowing down or taking it easy in the second half. Once again the Bearcats poured on a flurry of shots, taking eight in the third quarter, netting one goal to increase the score to 3-0, which would hold through until the final frame of action. The clock began to wind down in the fourth quarter, but Lincoln Memorial never slowed down, fighting until the very end. However, it was Lander who held on to secure a 3-0 victory in the South Atlantic Conference quarterfinal.

The Railsplitters were led in scoring this season by Jolie Plaisier with five goals, adding one assist, totaling 11 points. She was followed by Jimena Loustalot with four goals and a team-leading four assists, totaling 12 points on the season. Olivia Rosini, who became Lincoln Memorial's all-time leading career goal scorer against Barton on Senior Day, finished her final season in Harrogate with three goals and an assist, totaling seven points. Lise Holla worked her way up the scoring list in the final regular season game on Halloween night against Converse with two goals. She also added three assists on the year, totaling seven points on the season. Guadalupe Montaldo had three assists on the season, adding a goal against Barton, totaling five points on the year. Kelsey Beauchamp and Lainey Hockersmith added a goal and an assist each on the season, totaling three points.  Newcomer Naomi Spangler, a late addition to the team, had two goals on the season in just six games played, good for four total points on the year. Goalkeeper Cayla Wiggins led the South Atlantic Conference in saves with 126 on the season (following Tuesday's contest).
