Harrogate, TN - Nine days after taking a victory at Barton to match the program's all-time record for wins in a season, the Lincoln Memorial field hockey team was back in action at home Tuesday morning against the 8th-ranked Lander Bearcats. Lander defeated Lincoln Memorial earlier in the season, 5-1. The Bearcats entered the contest 5-1 on the season with a 2-1 mark in conference play. Lincoln Memorial entered the game with a 3-4 record, including an 0-1 mark in conference play.
Tuesday's game got off to a slow start. Both defenses were anything but porous. Although the Bearcats spent most of the first half in the offensive zone, Railsplitter goalkeeper
Cayla Wiggins was an absolute unit in the cage in the first half, tallying five saves, allowing zero goals, including three saves from three separate shot-takers on one play in the first half. Lincoln Memorial struggled to apply offensive pressure in the first half and were limited on shot opportunities, seeing the score remained knotted at goose eggs at the halftime horn, 0-0.
Both offenses saw more opportunities in the offensive zone to start the second half of the game. Lincoln Memorial struck first when
Olivia Rosini netted the game's first goal with the assist from
Lainey Hockersmith. With the goal, Rosini tied the all-time mark for career goals scored in Railsplitter field hockey history. However, Lander struck back swiftly, adding two quick goals to take its first lead of the game, 2-1. The game spilled into the final frame with the Bearcats maintaining the slim 2-1 advantage.
Both teams battled on both ends of the field in the final frame, however, the 8th-ranked Bearcats held on to defeat Lincoln Memorial narrowly, 2-1. The Railsplitters will be back on the road this weekend against Converse.
