15th-Ranked Men's Tennis Starts Road Trip with 4-1 Win at Newberry

Newberry, S.C. - The 15th-ranked Lincoln Memorial Men's Tennis team opened their first of five consecutive games on the road with an exclamation point, taking a conference win from Newberry 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The win gives the Railsplitters their 12th win of the season, as LMU moves to 12-4 this season and 6-2 in conference play.

Newberry would take the doubles point from LMU, but the third pairing of Ethan Hirons and Radu Florea picked up their 11th win of the season, taking a 6-2 victory into singles play as the duo now stands at 11-3 on the season.

The Splitters answered back in singles play, as the first points of the day for LMU came from the second singles position, as Mathias Roy battled back in a tough first set to claim a 6-4 win before taking a 6-2 win in the second set for the sweep.

Florea secured the same score from the third singles position, as a 6-4 first set win became a runaway 6-2 win in the second set for a straight set sweep of his Wolves opponent.

Kai Miyatake would put the Splitters one win shy of the win, as in the fourth singles position, Miyatake ran away with a two sets to none victory. The first set started with a deficit for Miyatake, but five unanswered points gave Miyatake an eventual 6-2 victory before securing a 6-1 set two win, as the sophomore picked up his 10th win of the season.

The finishing blow would come from Victor Bourguignon in the fifth singles position, as a mirror to the first two singles pools would play out for Bourguignon. After drawing through the first three points, Bourguignon would find himself down 3-4 with a need to climb back on his opponent. Bourguignon would net three consecutive for the opening set win, and a clean second set gave the junior his team-leading 11th win of the year.

The Railsplitters return to the courts tomorrow, starting their stretch of non-conference road matches with Auguusta University at Noon on Sunday.
