Melanie O'Neill

Melanie (Mel) enters her second year as a full-time athletic trainer with the Railsplitters, and she has gained experience working with a variety of different sports teams during her time spent at LMU. Last year, she supported many of her teams as they competed in conference tournaments and other post-season events, with one of her favorite memories including the opportunity to travel with the Railsplitter softball team to the NCAA regional tournament!

Originally from Maryland, she graduated from Frostburg State University, where she was one of eight students to first graduate from the school's combined 5-year MSAT program, earning a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science in 2021, and a Master of Science in Athletic Training in 2023. During her time in Frostburg, she had the opportunity to work with several different sports teams at the institution, including baseball, softball, swimming, and men's lacrosse. During her final year in graduate school, she worked as a graduate assistant and conducted research on how to help rural volunteer firefighters become more resilient in their line of duty. She also had the opportunity to gain more hands-on ballpark experience through a clinical rotation at Potomac State College in Keyser, WV, where she worked with their baseball and softball teams in the spring.

Mel is an avid ice hockey fan, and is eager to introduce new fans to the sports. You can catch her going to a Knoxville Ice Bears game, or staying in with her cat Bandit to watch the Washington Capitals play. When hockey is not in season, she loves spending time outdoors fishing, hiking, and gardening.
