128 Abe's Excellence Award winners to be recognized on Thursday night

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lincoln Memorial University athletics department will recognize 128 student-athletes for outstanding achievement in the classroom with the newly-minted Abe's Excellence Award at halftime of Thursday night's men's basketball game against Tusculum.

The 315 student-athletes comprising the LMU athletics department put together a cumulative 3.16 grade-point average in the fall semester, which is one of the highest term GPAs in recent memory. More than a third of those athletes finished with a GPA of 3.5 or better that is required to receive the Abe's Excellence Award, while 13 student-athletes completed the fall semester with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

The 128 Abe's Excellence Award winners will be honored and presented their awards during a halftime ceremony at Thursday's men's hoops game.

"I couldn't be prouder of this year's Abe's Excellence Award winners, who exemplify what it means to be student-athletes," LMU Athletic Director Matthew Green said. "It's no small feat to handle the rigors of college athletics and academics, but these 128 young men and women do so regularly at an incredibly high level. I am proud of every one of our student-athletes at LMU and especially look forward to honoring this select group on Thursday night."

The women's soccer team led the department with 15 total Abe's Excellence Award winners, while the women's tennis and softball teams led the way in terms of highest percentage of players to achieve that distinction. Seven of the eight women's tennis players finished with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, while Javiera Gonzalez Soto and Rosa Smith both earned perfect 4.0 GPAs. The softball team saw 14 of its 17 players earn the Abe's Excellence Award. The women's golf team also had a solid semester with seven of its 10 players finishing with a 3.5 GPA or better.

The men's and women's lacrosse teams as well as the men's soccer squad had 10 players claim the award, while the baseball team had 12, including Logan Augustine and Peter Pratti, who finished with 4.0 GPAs.
