HARROGATE, Tenn. -- As the end of the year approaches, the Lincoln Memorial University athletics department is counting down the top 20 moments of 2015. Coming in at No. 7, we look back to the women's basketball team's stunning, last-second victory over the 20th-ranked Carson-Newman Eagles.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters entered the South Atlantic Conference and Tex Turner Arena opener on November 24 having dropped two of their first three games on buzzer beaters. It's hard to imagine a more difficult way to start the season, but Lincoln Memorial flipped the script and finally fell on the winning end of some late-game magic against its biggest rival.
Â
After trailing by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, the Lady Railsplitters steadily chipped away at Carson-Newman's lead in the fourth period before tying the game at 52-52 on
Megan Pittman's (Liberty, Ky.) bucket with 1:25 left.
Â
The Eagles regained a two-point edge after Kayla Newman converted a pair of free throws with 44 seconds remaining. However,
Josey Harding (Middletown, Ohio) scored off of an offensive rebound and drew a foul on the play 22 seconds later to draw the game back even.
Â
Harding missed the free throw, but the ball deflected out of bounds off of the Eagles, giving the Lady Railsplitters an opportunity to win the game in regulation.
Â
After in-bounding the ball,
Britney Guy (Locust Grove, Ga.) drove into the paint, where her shot was blocked by Tatum Burstrom. Fortuitously, the ball deflected directly to
Jasmine Kelly (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.), and she banked in the 10-foot jumper from the left wing with 0.8 seconds left to secure the 56-54 victory.
Â
The win was LMU's first against a ranked opponent since February of 2005, when the Lady Railsplitters notched a 59-56 overtime win against Valdosta State.
Â
Pittman paced the Lady Railsplitters with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while both Harding and Guy had 10 points apiece.
