Railsplitters snag 2-1 win over Anderson on Senior Day

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters (7-3-2, 4-2-2 SAC) built a two-goal edge and withstood a late rally to knock off the Anderson Trojans (6-7, 4-4 SAC) 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at the LMU Soccer Complex. Since that three match losing skid, Lincoln Memorial has recorded three wins and a draw in its past four appearances on the pitch.

Junior striker Yinka Lawal (Bromley, England) ended his scoring drought, recording the first goal of his career in the Blue and Gray by staking the Railsplitters to a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute. Lawal received a direct feed up the right side from midfielder Yuri Passos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) before placing a perfectly struck ball into the left corner from nearly 25 yards out.

The Railsplitters took that 1-0 advantage into the half, but midfielder Lucas Coro (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) provided some breathing room with a goal in the 47th minute. Coro collected a deflected shot in the middle of the box before heading it into the open net, finishing off his first goal of the 2014 campaign.

Anderson cut LMU's lead in half just seven minutes later as Andre Carle scored off an assist from Magnus Larsen in the 54th minute.

The Trojans threatened to even the match on several occasions down the stretch, but the Railsplitter defense withstood the pressure. Anderson's Bernd Muxel registered a shot on goal in the 75th minute while Larsen put another attempt between the frames in the 87th minute, but LMU senior goalkeeper Marcel Barwanietz (Berlin, Germany) turned both of those tries away. Larsen fired the final shot on goal in the waning seconds of the 90th minute, but Harry Solomons (Leicester, England) batted it away.

The Railsplitters finished with a 14-8 edge on shot attempts, but Anderson accounted for seven shots on goal compared to five for the home squad. Lawal led the Railsplitters with three shots, all of which found their mark.

Barwanietz picked up the win in goal for the Railsplitters, recording four saves with a single goal allowed in 90 minutes. His counterpart, Anderson's Bo Haug, collected a pair of saves while relinquishing two goals over that same span.

Along with the action on the pitch, the Railsplitters celebrated Senior Day with a ceremony during halftime. Barwanietz, Passos and Isaac Cummins (Knoxville, Tenn.) were honored for their individual accomplishments while wearing the Blue and Gray.

The Railsplitters wrap up the home schedule on Wednesday, October 22, returning to the LMU Soccer Complex for a South Atlantic Conference bout with the Tusculum Pioneers. First kick in that draw is slated for 3:30 p.m.
