Lady Railsplitters grind out five-set victory over Queens

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (13-9, 9-5 SAC) cruised early before gritting out a 3-2 win over the visiting Queens Royals (5-17, 2-12 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Mary Mars Gym. Lincoln Memorial won with set scores of 25-14, 25-16, 23-25, 21-25, 15-6.

The Lady Railsplitters finished with a season-high .317 attack percentage, recording 56 kills with only 11 errors on 142 total attempts. Lincoln Memorial also matched its second-highest block output with 16 block assists.

Freshman Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) posted arguably the most impressive match of her debut season in the Blue and Gray as the Columbia, S.C. native collected 15 kills on a .519 attack percentage with two service aces and 15 digs. Junior middle blocker Jazzy Oates (Franklin, Tenn.) backed that effort by amassing 12 kills on a .400 attacking clip. Sophomore Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) also tallied 12 kills, hitting .286 to acquire that number. Senior Allison Beavers (Tomball, Texas) contributed nine kills and seven scoops. Sophomore Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) figured in a double-double with 46 assists and 10 digs, while junior Casey Mense (Littleton, Colo.) led the Lady Railsplitters with 22 digs.

The Lady Railsplitters rolled in sets one and two, combining for 29 kills with only four errors over that span. Lincoln Memorial hit .536 in the opening set and .263 in the second. The Royals, meanwhile, produced only 22 kills with 11 errors to fall behind 2-0 in the match.

The tables turned in sets three and four as Queens racked up 32 combined kills compared to only 19 for the Lady Railsplitters to even the match at 2-2.

The decisive fifth set was dominated by the Lady Railsplitters, who jumped in front 7-3 on a Holland kill. The Royals clung within striking distance as a Rebecca Cochran kill made it 10-6, but Lincoln Memorial closed the fifth frame on a 5-0 run paced by two kills from Kendra Gephart (Morrow, Ohio), another kill by Fleeman and two Queens attack errors. The Lady Railsplitters hit .467 in the set while Queens was limited to a -.048 clip.

The Royals hit .166 cumulatively for the match, compiling 59 kills and 31 costly errors. Meredith Jones paced Queens with 15 kills, while Elizabeth Bialkowski and Rebecca Cochran added 13 and 11, respectively. Katie Schoenrock chipped in nine kills and led the Royals with 19 digs. Sydney Kunz posted 46 assists and 10 digs.

Since suffering a five-set loss at Anderson, the Lady Railsplitters have ripped off three straight wins. Lincoln Memorial sits in a tie for fourth in the league standings.

The Lady Railsplitters return to action Tuesday, October 21 with a trip to Mars Hill, N.C. to take on the Mars Hill Lions. First serve in that SAC bout is scheduled for 7 p.m.
