HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters (5-3-1, 2-2-1 SAC) snapped a three-match losing skid and evened their South Atlantic Conference ledger by cruising to a 3-1 triumph over the Brevard Tornados (3-7-1, 1-4 SAC) Saturday at the LMU Soccer Complex.
Â
Lincoln Memorial rolled to its sixth consecutive win over the Tornados by outshooting the visitors from Brevard, N.C. by a commanding 32-7 margin while registering a 14-2 corner kick advantage. Brevard was forced to play a man down for nearly 70 minutes as keeper Heath Turner was issued a red card for a sliding tackle in the box late in the 23rd minute.
Â
Prior to Turner's ejection, the Railsplitters were staked to a 1-0 lead by junior
Leonardo da Silva (Itajuba, Brazil) in the 13th minute as he received a
George Burne (Carlisle, England) feed from the right side before finishing with a left-footed strike. The goal was da Silva's sixth of the season while the assist was the first for Burne in his sophomore campaign.
Â
Just 10 minutes later, the Railsplitters doubled their lead on the penalty kick brought forth by Turner's red card. Senior goalkeeper
Marcel Barwanietz (Berlin, Germany) pressed forward to attempt the PK, blasting a shot past the newly-entered Juan Mascaro Jr. to record the first goal of his three-year tenure at LMU. Â
Â
The Tornados would break through before the half was completed as Winston Haddock headed in a free kick from Sergi Monso in the 34th frame.
Â
Brevard would account for two more shots in the final minute of the first frame but that would be the remainder of the offensive output for the Tornados. The Railsplitters asserted themselves offensively by registering a 19-0 shot disparity in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
Â
The Railsplitters added only one more goal to their lead, though, as
Yuri Passos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) blasted in his second goal of the season from 40 yards out in the waning seconds of the 86th minute.
Â
Junior
Yinka Lawal (Bromley, England) led Lincoln Memorial with six shots, two shots on target and a number of near misses as the Bromley, England native continues to seek his first score in the Blue and Gray. Passos posted four shots and a pair on goal, while da Silva,
Harry Solomons (Leicester, England),
Nathaniel Johnson (London, England) and
Nick Boegemann (Johnson City, Tenn.) manufactured three shots apiece.
Â
Along with his goal, Barwanietz filed 90 minutes in net with one save to his stat ledger.
Â
The win helped the Railsplitters snap a three-match losing streak, which was the longest such streak for the program since the start of the 2003 campaign. Lincoln Memorial avoided dropping three straight home matches for the first time since 2002.
Â
Brevard reserve keeper Juan Mascaro Jr. performed admirably in the absence of Turner as he deflected eight shot attempts with two goals allowed in 67:11 minutes of action. Haddock, Monso and Robert Ferrer paced the Tornados with two shots each.
Â
The Railsplitters return to action Wednesday, October 8, paying a visit to the Carson-Newman Eagles for a showdown with the 2013 NCAA National Championship runner-up. First kick between LMU and Carson-Newman is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tenn.
