HARROGATE, Tenn. – Senior
Nicole McKinney (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and sophomore
Michelle Hunter (Tecumseh, Ontario) supplied the damage as the Lady Railsplitters (6-2, 4-1 SAC) claimed their fifth straight win by toppling the Brevard Tornados (3-7, 1-4 SAC) 2-0 in league action Saturday at the LMU Soccer Complex.
With the win the Lady Railsplitters have now won four straight South Atlantic Conference competitions to remain tied atop the league standings. Additionally, the Lady Railsplitters pushed their record to 8-0 all-time in head-to-head matchups with the Tornados including a 4-0 record at home.
Forward
Nicole McKinney put Lincoln Memorial on the board in the 18th minute when the senior collected a headed forward pass by teammate
Michelle Hunter just past midfield and dribbled herself into a one-on-one situation with Tornado goalkeeper Jocelyn Springer, who McKinney beat for the opening goal of the contest.
Saturday's strike marked McKinney's first goal of the season and the 13th of her career.
Lincoln Memorial would score again in the 63rd minute as Hunter headed home the rebound off of a
Fernanda Miaci (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil) corner kick that ricocheted off the crossbar. The scored marked the sixth goal of the season for Hunter as the Tecumseh, Ontario native has now scored in five of the team's eight games this season, bringing her career total to 14. Miaci was credited with the third assist of her debut season in the Blue and Gray.
Lincoln Memorial thoroughly controlled the pace Saturday as the team mustered a 31-3 shot disparity, limiting the Tornado attack to a lone shot on goal. Brevard was unable to record a shot attempt until the 42
nd minute of the contest. The Lady Railsplitters added a 5-1 corner kick advantage.
Nine different Lady Railsplitters accumulated shots in the match as
Maddy Nagy (Rockledge, Fla.),
Olivia Thompson (Melbourne, Fla.) and Miaci lead the way with six shots apiece. In addition, both Hunter and McKinney fired four and three shots, respectively, while
Josefin Hedstrom (Burtrask, Sweden) contributed three shots of her own.
Junior netminder
Kayla Stephens (Keller, Texas) made it seven straight scoreless appearances as the Keller, Texas native recorded one save in nearly 77 minutes of action before giving way to sophomore
Kathryn Lundy (Pinckney, Mich.) for the final 13:16.
Two yellow cards were issued in the contest as LMU's
Kadie Soall (Tecumseh, Ontario) and Brevard's Alex Perri drew the penalties.
The Lady Railsplitters return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 8, hitting the road to Jefferson City, Tenn. for a SAC bout against the Carson-Newman Eagles. First kick in that contest is slated for 5 p.m.
