Lady Railsplitters knock off Coker 3-1

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (9-7, 5-3 SAC) finished with a season-high .297 attack percentage while three different players trekked into double-digit kill territory in a 3-1 win over the visiting Coker Cobras (3-12, 0-8 SAC) on Saturday afternoon at Mary E. Mars Gymnasium. Lincoln Memorial toppled the Cobras by sets scores of 31-29, 25-13, 22-25 and 25-17.

The Lady Railsplitters compiled 62 kills with 15 errors for a .297 hitting clip, surpassing their previous season-high of .288 in a five-set win over the King Tornado back on September 13. The Cobras, meanwhile, posted 56 kills and 24 miscues for a .195 attack percentage.

Freshman Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) swung free and easy, belting a match-high 16 kills on a season-best .600 attack percentage. Holland added two service aces, nine digs and two block assists to her stat ledger. Graduate student MaRanda Boddie (Springfield, Ohio) collected a career-high 13 kills on a .480 attacking clip to go alongside a match-leading four block assists. Sophomore Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) also filed 13 kills with four digs and a pair of block assists. Allison Beavers (Tomball, Texas) and Allison McKinnon (Missouri City, Texas) figured in seven and six kills, respectively.

Sophomore setter Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) collected another double-double with 43 assists and 10 digs, while junior Casey Mense (Littleton, Colo.) contributed a team-high 16 digs. Outside hitter Kendra Gephart (Morrow, Ohio) did a little bit of everything with three kills, two assists and nine digs, while Bristol Snider (Chattanooga, Tenn.) chipped in eight scoops.

The two teams combined for 44 kills in the opening frame as the Lady Railsplitters hit .382 to the Cobras' .280 mark. The frame featured nine ties and three lead changes as Lincoln Memorial found itself on the winning side of the final momentum shift, ending the set with three unanswered points to steal a 31-29 victory.

The Lady Railsplitters never trailed in the second set as the Cobras struggled to mount any attack. Coker hit -.027 with only eight kills and nine errors while the Lady Railsplitters batted .222 over that same span. A 7-0 run at the midway point helped Lincoln Memorial mount a 20-8 edge, which was only a prelude to Fleeman finishing off the frame with a kill.

The Cobras briefly staved off elimination with an efficient and productive offensive attack in the third set as they hit .300 with 13 kills and only one error. LMU led 14-11 before Coker ripped off a 9-2 run to assume a 20-16 cushion. The Lady Railsplitters would pull to within two late, but a Megan Hardy kill finished off the set in Coker's favor.

The Lady Railsplitters slammed down the throttle in the fourth frame, hitting .343 with 14 kills and only two errors. After trailing 6-3, Lincoln Memorial went on an 8-2 run to pulse in front 11-8. The Lady Railsplitters would not trail again in the set, eventually finishing it off with kills by Cash and Fleeman.

Madison Bingle paced the Cobras with 15 kills and 17 digs. Christen Bragg fell just one kill shy of a triple-double with nine kills, 21 assists and 16 scoops, while Alexis Berles factored in eight kills. Celia Duggan led Coker with a .400 attack percentage as she finished the match with seven kills. Bailey O'Brien contributed a team-high 23 assists. Samantha Celek added four assists and 14 digs.

The Lady Railsplitters improved to 3-0 in the all-time series against Coker, who fell to 0-29 in South Atlantic Conference play since joining the league prior to the start of the 2013 season.

The Lady Railsplitters complete their three-match home stand by welcoming arch-rival Carson-Newman to Mary Mars Gym for a South Atlantic Conference bout at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
