No.6 Railsplitters close out 2014 with trip to UVA-Wise

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Looking to accumulate an 11-game winning streak for the third time in less than a calendar year, the sixth-ranked Railsplitters (10-0) travel to Wise, Va. on Sunday afternoon to close out the 2014 portion of the schedule with a nonconference tilt against the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers (1-7). Tip-off between Lincoln Memorial and UVA-Wise is scheduled for 3 p.m. inside of the David J. Prior Convocation Center.

The Railsplitters take back to the court after arguably their most impressive performance of the 2014-15 campaign, a dominant 100-81 victory over 21st-ranked Newberry on Monday in Tex Turner Arena.  The Railsplitters held the fourth-highest scoring offense 15 points below its season average and limited the Wolves to only 39.3 percent shooting. On the other end, Lincoln Memorial shot 54.3 percent, hit eight three-pointers and outscored the visiting unit 56-30 in the paint. Four different players hit double-figures for the Railsplitters, led by 21 points apiece from Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) and Tim Pierce (Albany, Ga.). Keenan Peterson (College Park, Ga.) tallied his first double-double of the season with 19 points and 17 rebounds.

While the Railsplitters are riding a 10-game winning streak into Sunday's contest, their opponent is heading in a completely different direction as the UVA-Wise Cavaliers are looking for their first win since a 108-106 triumph over Elizabeth City State in the season opener on November 14. The Cavaliers have dropped seven straight decisions since that time, and none of those seven losses have been decided by fewer than 15 points. The Railsplitters and Cavs share a common opponent in the King Tornado. Lincoln Memorial knocked off the Tornado 70-63 in the second game of the season on November 15, while UVA-Wise suffered a 39-point loss to King just two days ago.

The Cavaliers are scoring just 61.5 points per game on 33.1 percent shooting, while their opponents are racking up nearly 90 points (87.8) on a 49.1 percent mark. Philip Owens II and Charles George lead UVA-Wise with 10.9 and 10.1 points per game, respectively. Owens II has hit 16 three-pointers and swiped a team-leading 16 steals, while George is dishing out 4.6 assists per game. Matt Day is contributing 8.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while Brian Sydnor is pitching in 7.8 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game.

It was a similar scenario the last time the Railsplitters traveled to Wise, Va., as Lincoln Memorial entered that contest on December 8, 2012 ranked 11th in the country with a perfect 6-0 mark. The Cavaliers overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat the Railsplitters 81-80 in overtime. The Blue and Gray more than avenged that loss last season at Tex Turner Arena, dismantling the Cavaliers 83-57 on December 21, 2013. Curtis Webb (Spartanburg, S.C.) posted 11 points, five rebounds and four assists in that contest, while Curtis McMillion (Fayetteville, N.C.) added nine points and five boards in 18 minutes.

The Railsplitters are vying for their third win streak of 11 games or longer in a calendar year. LMU ripped off a 13-game winning streak from November 30, 2013 to February 1, 2014, and they added an 11-game flurry from February 8, 2014 until March 15, 2014. The Railsplitters have not lost the game immediately before Christmas break in the Josh Schertz era. The last such loss came on December 15, 2007 at the hands of North Georgia.

Tip-off between LMU and UVA-Wise is set for 3 p.m. in Wise, Va. Live stats and a free video broadcast will be available compliments of the UVA-Wise Sports Information Department.
