Lady Railsplitters push winning streak to six with 3-1 win over Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Lady Railsplitters (7-4, 3-0 SAC) avenged a season-ending loss to the Queens Royals (4-7, 1-2 SAC) and extended their season-long winning streak to six games with a 3-1 win in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C. Lincoln Memorial dropped the first set 25-19 but bounced back to win each of the next three sets by that exact score.

The Lady Railsplitters' six-match winning streak is their longest since 2012, when Lincoln Memorial ran off six-consecutive wins from September 21 to October 5. The Lady Railsplitters also halted a two-match losing streak to the Queens Royals, who ended LMU's 2013 campaign with a 3-1 win in the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference Championship.

The Lady Railsplitters racked up 49 kills with 20 errors on 142 attempts for a .204 attack percentage, while the Royals notched 47 kills and 26 errors for a .140 clip. Lincoln Memorial accounted for a 71-61 advantage on digs and was aided by 11 Queens' service miscues. Both teams posted 14 blocks assists, but the Royals committed four blocking errors to zero for LMU.

Freshman outside hitter Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) led all players in the match with 15 kills, and the Columbia, S.C. native added 11 digs and two service aces. Sophomore Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) factored in 14 kills on a .333 attack percentage to go alongside three block assists. Sophomore Kara Solek (Denver, N.C.) chipped in with seven kills. Sophomore setter Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) posted her fifth double-double of the season with 36 assists and 11 digs. Junior Casey Mense (Littleton, Colo.) paced everyone with 25 scoops, while Allison McKinnon (Missouri City, Texas) collected a team-high four block assists.

Rebecca Cochran carried the Royals offensively with 13 kills and she added eight digs to her stat ledger. She was the only Queens player with double-digit kills as Katie Schoenrock (9) and Elizabeth Bialkowski (7) were the next highest contributors. Sydney Kunz finished with 42 assists and 16 digs to lead the Royals in both categories. Megan Mancini picked up 15 scoops in the four-set loss.

The Lady Railsplitters trailed 14-8 in the opening set but fought back to within one at 14-13 following a Fleeman kill. After trading the point in the next two rallies, the Royals ripped off a 7-2 run, capped with a Bialkowski kill, to extend their lead to 22-16. Lincoln Memorial was never able to close the gap to any less than four down the stretch, suffering a 25-19 loss.

Lincoln Memorial would, however, return the favor in each of the next three frames. A kill by Holland and a Queens attack error pressed the Lady Railsplitters out to a 14-8 advantage in set two. LMU continued to push as the frame waned on as Holland connected on kills in three of four rallies to boast the lead to 21-14. Another Queens attack error ended the first of three 25-19 set victories for the Lady Railsplitters.

After dropping the first exchange, the Lady Railsplitters never trailed in set three, finding themselves locked in a 16-16 stalemate at the midway point. Lincoln Memorial gained some ground with a 4-0 run paced by three Queens miscues and another Fleeman kill. The Royals never pulled any closer than three points down the stretch as an Abby Cash kill and a ball-handling error awarded the Lady Railsplitters a 25-19 triumph.

The Lady Railsplitters and Royals played to an 8-8 tie through the first 16 rallies of set four, but Lincoln Memorial grinded out a 14-6 run over the next passage of play. That flurry was helped by six Royals attacking errors and three Holland kills. Queens brought it back to 22-17, but Jazzy Oates (Franklin, Tenn.), Holland and McKinnon registered kills in three of the final five rallies to cap the victory.

Lincoln Memorial returns to action on Tuesday, September 23 at Mary Mars Gymnasium with a 7 p.m. South Atlantic Conference match against the Tusculum Pioneers.
