COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The Lady Railsplitters (1-1) rebounded from Friday's season-opening loss to No.2 West Florida and picked up the first win of 2014 by toppling Conference Carolinas foe Mount Olive (0-2), 2-0, on Sunday morning at the CSU Collegiate Invitational in Columbus, Ga.
Â
With the win, Lincoln Memorial improved to 3-1-1 in the all-time series against the Trojans, avenging a 1-0 loss from the two teams' most recent encounter in 2011.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters opened the scoring just under 10 minutes into the first half period as
Fernanda Miaci (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil) took a pass from fellow senior forward
Nicole McKinney (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and netted her first goal as a Lady Railsplitter, giving the Blue and Gray a 1-0 advantage at the 9:24 mark.
Â
Mount Olive had several chances to tie the contest in the second half, but all three of the Trojans' second-half shots on goal were turned away by veteran backstop
Kayla Stephens (Keller, Texas). Stephens spent the final 45 minutes in goal in relief of sophomore
Kathryn Lundy (Pinckney, Mich.), who turned away one shot in the first 45 minutes to combine for the shutout.
Â
Lincoln Memorial broke a second half scoring drought and put the match out of reach with four minutes remaining in the contest as
Maddy Nagy (Rockledge, Fla.) managed to sneak past the Trojan defense and dodge Mount Olive keeper Gigi Ramirez, tallying the first goal of her season and the third of her career.
Â
Seven different players etched shot attempts for Lincoln Memorial in the contest, as the Lady Railsplitters finished with a narrow 14-11 edge on shots fired. Miaci and
Michelle Hunter (Tecumseh, Ontario) led that group with four and three shots, respectively. Nagy and
Olivia Thompson (Melbourne, Fla.) added two shots apiece, while McKinney,
Kristen Cook (Little Rock, Ark.) and
Kadie Soall (Tecumseh, Ontario) tallied a single shot.
Â
The match featured only a single corner kick with Mount Olive taking a 1-0 edge in that category.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters are slated to return to action on Saturday, September 13, opening South Atlantic Conference play against the Coker Cobras in the home opener. First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the LMU Soccer Complex in Harrogate, Tenn.
