AIKEN, S.C. -- The 14th-ranked USC Aiken Pacers (2-0) combined for 13 runs in the seventh and eighth innings to erase a 4-2 deficit and defeat the Railsplitters (0-2) 15-5 in the second game of the three-game nonconference baseball series on Saturday afternoon in Aiken, S.C.
Â
Until that late-inning surge, Lincoln Memorial had mostly kept the nation's 14th-ranked team in check offensively, relinquishing just two runs on a two-run single by Tyler Moore in the bottom of the third.
Â
The Railsplitters managed only two hits through the first four innings before finally breaking through and finding some offense in the visitor's half of the fifth frame.
Kyle Floyd (Windsor, Ill.) belted a leadoff double,
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) walked and
Danny Valdez (Orlando, Fla.) reached safely while trying to bunt the runners over, loading the bases with no outs.
Ryan Burlison (Romeoville, Ill.) singled in the Railsplitters' first run of the game, while
Scott Miller (Knoxville, Tenn.) tied it up with a sacrifice fly out.
Â
Two innings later, the Railsplitters took over the lead on an unusual play. Burlison and
Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) singled in back-to-back at-bats, and both moved into scoring position on a fielder's choice. With two outs,
Jonathan Lowe (Sidney, Ohio) plated both runs with a rare groundout to the right fielder.
Â
The Railsplitters carried a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh, but that's when the wheels fell off for the visiting unit. Three-straight singles and a Ty Barkell double evened the score at 4-4, then TJ Costen walked to chase LMU starter
Grant Painter (Knoxville, Tenn.) from the game. Matt Bosse, Chaz Pal and Zach Moon each recorded run-scoring hits in the next three plate appearances for the Pacers, who batted around before the first out of the inning was recorded. All told, USC Aiken sent 12 batters into the box and scored seven runs in the frame.
Â
LMU got one back on an RBI single by Augustine in the top of the eighth, but the Pacers put up six more runs in the bottom half of that inning. The first seven batters of the inning recorded a hit for USC Aiken, with triples by Barkell and Bosse highlighting that scoring flourish.
Â
The Railsplitters compiled 10 hits in the contest. Floyd, Neiderland and Burlison each went 2-for-4, while Lowe led the team with a pair of RBI. Augustine went 1-for-2 and reached base two additional times via a walk.
Â
Grant Painter was stuck with the loss after allowing 13 hits and six earned runs in six-plus innings of work on the mound. Four of the runs against Painter were scored in that big seventh-inning flurry. The Railsplitters used four relievers for the last two innings of work. Among those four,
Drew Lyles (Cleveland, Tenn.) allowed only one hit in an inning of scoreless work.
Â
The Railsplitters left 10 runners stranded on base in the contest. Ben Black picked up the victory for the Pacers after allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts in three innings of work. Erik Davis made the start, tossing five innings with two earned runs against his ledger.
Â
Eight different guys contributed at least two hits for USC Aiken, led by Chaz Pal's 4-for-5 showing with two RBI and two runs scored. Sean Miller, Tyler Moore and Ty Barkell all added three hits apiece.
Â
The Railsplitters and Pacers complete their three-game set on Sunday afternoon in Aiken, S.C. First pitch in the third and final game of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
