MEN'S SOCCER CENTRAL: Catawba

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters (9-3-1, 6-3-1 SAC) aim to clinch the No. 3 seed for the upcoming South Atlantic Conference Championship as they welcome the Catawba Indians (5-10, 3-7 SAC) to the LMU Soccer Complex on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for the regular season finale and Senior Day.

Lincoln Memorial can't catch either Wingate or Carson-Newman in the race for the SAC regular season title, but there is still a lot on the line as the Indians invade Harrogate. A win would assure the Railsplitters a top-four spot for next week's SAC tournament and allow Lincoln Memorial to host its quarterfinal round match, which would be held at 2 p.m. next Tuesday.

A strong finish could also very well see the Railsplitters break back into the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2007 season, when they advanced all the way to the NCAA Division II National Championship game. Lincoln Memorial was slotted at No. 7 in the most recent Southeast Region poll. The top six teams in the final rankings, which will be released at the completion of the SAC tournament, earn bids to the NCAA Southeast Regional.

The Railsplitters enter Saturday having won three of their last four matches, most recently dismissing the Anderson Trojans 2-1 in Anderson, S.C. last weekend. That one-goal disparity undersells what was a rather dominant performance for Lincoln Memorial, who outshot the Trojans 15-7 and limited the home team to two second-half shot attempts.

The Trojans took the lead in the seventh minute when Lars Kaula converted a penalty kick set up by a handball in the box, but the Railsplitters responded with goals in the 36th and 37th minutes. Danilo da Silva (Campinas, Brazil) drew the match even with a one-timer from just outside of the box at the 35:05 mark and then assisted on Philip Wong's (Hong Kong, China) eventual game-winning goal at 36:57.

The Railsplitters hope to get at least one more home match this season, but Saturday will be the last regular season contest at the LMU Soccer Complex for Lincoln Memorial's six-man senior class. Yinka Lawal (Bromley, England), Leonardo da Silva (Itajuba, Brazil), Lucas Coro (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil), Nathaniel Johnson (London, England), Pedro Villa (New Braunfels, Texas) and William Siu (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil) will each be honored during a Senior Day ceremony at halftime.

Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. at the LMU Soccer Complex. Live stat and video links are available at www.LMURailsplitters.com.

An October swoon, which featured five consecutive losses, spelled doom for the Indians, who enter the regular-season finale officially out of the playoff picture with a 3-7 SAC record and nine points. Catawba picked up their first win in October and snapped that five-game skid last Saturday with a 2-1 overtime win against Tusculum, but fell for the sixth time in the last seven tries on Wednesday with a 4-1 loss to No. 1 nationally-ranked and unbeaten Pfeiffer.

Catawba has been decent offensively this season, as they have tallied 23 total goals and 1.5 goals per game despite ranking 10th in the South Atlantic Conference in shots per match with 10.8. The defense has been a different story though, especially of late. The Indians have conceded an average of 2.11 goals per match, the third-worst goals against average in the conference. That number has ballooned substantially in the last three weeks too, as the Indians have surrendered four goals in four of their last five appearances on the pitch.

Senior forward Kenny Bonilla is the unquestioned leader of the Indians' offensive attack, as he paces the team with seven goals, 30 shots and 13 shots on goal. He has also contributed a pair of assists. Sophomore Philipp Hollenhorst has accounted for three goals and an assist on just nine shots and five shots on goal, while Belony Joseph has two goals and two assists. Jack Ragen has put up 28 shots and eight shots on goal, but has been limited to a single goal with three assists.

Junior netminder Christian Watts carries a 2.01 goals against average with a .651 save percentage into Saturday's match. He has posted three shutouts this season with 54 saves and a 5-9 record.

The Railsplitters suffered a 1-0 setback to Catawba in last season's meeting in Salisbury, N.C., snapping Lincoln Memorial's nine-match winning streak against the Indians. The two teams finished with nine shots apiece, but it was Declan Stimson's 65th minute goal that made the difference. Lawal and Siu paced the Railsplitters with two shot attempts apiece. Watts made four saves to keep the Railsplitters out of the scoring column.

Lincoln Memorial owns an 11-6 edge in the all-time series and has not lost to the Indians in Harrogate since September 13, 2003.
