Lady Railsplitters pound Mars Hill in straight sets to win third straight

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (7-6, 5-5 SAC) dominated in every way possible in a straight-set victory over the Mars Hill Lions (4-9, 2-7 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Mary Mars Gym. Lincoln Memorial captured its third consecutive win and got back even in league play with set scores of 25-9, 25-12 and 25-13.

The Lady Railsplitters controlled virtually every aspect of Tuesday's match, hitting .259 with 31 kills and a season-low nine attack errors while limiting the Lions to 16 kills on a dismal -.097 attack percentage. That was the fifth-fewest kills by an LMU opponent since 2005 and the fewest since they held Virginia State to 10 kills in 2010. It marked the first time since 2011 that the Lady Railsplitters have forced an opponent into a negative hitting percentage.

Mars Hill had trouble handling Lincoln Memorial's serve all night, as the Lady Railsplitters racked up 12 service aces, their most since November 1, 2013. Erica Whiteaker (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) led all players with six aces, while Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) amassed four.

Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) and Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) paced the Lady Railsplitters offensively with seven kills apiece. Brock hit above .400 for the third consecutive match with a .462 attack percentage while Holland finished with a .263 clip and 11 digs. Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) contributed six kills. Jazzy Oates (Franklin, Tenn.) had four kills on just nine attempts.

In addition to her four aces, Cash produced 22 assists, 14 digs and three blocks assists, leading the Lady Railsplitters in all three categories. As a team, Lincoln Memorial accumulated 12 block assists and a pair of solo blocks. Whiteaker had 13 digs to surpass the 10-dig barrier for the third straight match.

The Lady Railsplitters won the first four points of the opening set and never looked back. After Mars Hill closed the gap to 5-3 on an LMU attack error, the Lady Railsplitters regained side-out and ripped off a 7-0 run on Holland's serve to take a 12-3 lead. Two kills by Brock and another by Oates completed that run. Later in the frame, a kill by Fleeman increased LMU's lead to 18-6. Following back-to-back points for the Lions, the Lady Railsplitters won seven of the last eight rallies to clinch the 25-9 victory. The home team outhit the visitors by a commanding 11-4 margin with a .308 attack percentage to the Lions' -.188 effort.

Mars Hill scored the first two points of the second set, but Lincoln Memorial quickly answered with a 10-2 run to assume a 10-4 edge on a pair of Lion attack errors. A mini Mars Hill spurt trimmed the Lady Railsplitters' lead to 13-9 on a Mary Kate Griffin kill, but Lincoln Memorial rode a hot serve from Cash on a 9-0 flurry. Cash had two service aces over that span while the Lions committed five attack blunders to make it a 22-9 lead. A Fleeman kill followed by a Mars Hill attack error concluded LMU's 25-12 victory.

The Lions took a 6-5 lead early in the third frame after a Maddie Spurgeon ace. That lead was short-lived, though, as the Lady Railsplitters won nine of the next 10 rallies to build a commanding 14-7 cushion. Another 4-0 flurry increased the Lady Railsplitters lead to 18-8 on a Holland kill, which they would make hold up with a match-sealing 25-13 win.

The Lady Railsplitters held the Lions to a negative attack percentage in all three sets as they finished with -.188, -.083 and -.029 marks. Lauren Hochstetler and Mary Kate Griffin led them with four kills apiece, while Elizabeth Kaeser and Rebecca Butler had three each. Andie Russell finished with 13 assists and matched the team lead with nine digs. Victoria Kaiser also had nine scoops.

Lincoln Memorial improved to 21-8 all-time against the Lions and won the fourth straight meeting at Mary Mars Gymnasium. Tuesday also completed a five-match homestand for the Lady Railsplitters, who went 4-1 over that favorable stretch of the schedule.

In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Side-Out Foundation, the Lady Railsplitters hosted their Dig Pink Match by pinking out Mary Mars Gym and raising money for breast cancer research. Lincoln Memorial recognized longtime fan, former LMU employee and seven-year breast cancer survivor Floyde Anne Gardner between the second and third sets.

The Lady Railsplitters also welcomed Team IMPACT athlete Madi Seidel, a seven-year old from Westland, Mich. who battled leukemia just two years ago, to the team during the pre-match introductions.

Lincoln Memorial breaks from South Atlantic Conference play this weekend when they head to the Palmetto State for nonconference tests against Francis Marion, Lander and USC Aiken.
