Harrogate, Tenn. -- Wingate used a 14-1 first-quarter run to pick up the 78-67 win over host Lincoln Memorial Wednesday night in the Tex Turner Arena.
The Lady Railsplitters (6-2, 3-2 SAC) saw their winning streak snapped by the Bulldogs (4-3, 3-2 SAC), who utilized their strong inside game to end their own two-game losing streak.
Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) led the way for LMU with her fifth double-double of the season as she had 18 points and 10 rebounds, going 5-8 from the field and a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe.
Britney Guy (Locust Grove, Ga.) had 11 points, three rebounds and four assists.
Lincoln Memorial, playing their third game in five days, went out to the early 5-2 lead following a three-pointer and two free throws by Guy. Wingate then used a combination of their inside game, control of the boards and cold shooting by the Lady Railsplitters to put together a 12-1 run to go out to a 16-6 lead at the end of the first frame. During the run they scored 12 of their 14 points in the paint and held LMU to 0-5 from the field.
The second quarter saw the Bulldogs extend their lead to 24-12 off the jumper by Kristina Rumplasch with 6:33 remaining before LMU went on a 10-1 run of their own to cut the lead to 25-22 following an
Emily Griffith (Oliver Springs, Tenn.) layup with 3:01 left in the half. It would be as close as they would get the rest of the game as Wingate extended their lead to 34-24 at the half.
The third and fourth quarters saw the Bulldogs hold off any an all attempts by LMU to regain the lead as the Lady Railsplitters were never able to get closer than 10 points en route to their fourth loss of the season.
Lincoln Memorial would finish the evening shooting 43.1 percent (22-51) from the field, 28.6 percent (4-14) from beyond the three-point arc and 76 percent (19-25) from the free throw line.
One key stat was rebounding as LMU had their worst performance of the season on the boards, pulling down only 31 rebounds to Wingate's 44.
The Bulldogs were led by Rumplasch's 18 points and four rebounds. Shelby Tricoli had 15 points and three rebounds, Morgan McGee added in 11 points and seven rebounds while Courtney Robinson had 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Wingate went 30-70 (42.9 percent) from the field, 4-7 (57.1 percent) from three-point range and 14-19 (73.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
Quick HitsWingate became only the third team to out-rebound the Lady Railsplitters at home and the sixth team overall to manage that feat in the
Krystal Evans era... LMU's 16 turnovers were the third-lowest of the season, but Wingate's nine were the fewest by an opponent during the same period...
Megan Pittman's double-double was the 11th of her career... Pittman also scored her 400th career point on a free throw in the fourth quarter. The junior ended the evening with 411 points for her career.
