Men's lacrosse pummels Lees-McRae for first victory in program history

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Freshman Tylor Justin (Buffalo, N.Y.) struck for four goals and assisted on another as the Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse team (1-1) pounded the Lees-McRae Bobcats (0-1) 15-6 on Saturday afternoon, capturing the first victory in program history at the LMU Lacrosse Complex opener.

The Bobcats opened the scoring with 12:47 remaining in the first half when Blaine Stottlar posted the first of his four goals in the contest, firing a shot into the back of the net to give Lees-McRae an early 1-0 advantage. The Railsplitters evened the duel just minutes later when Jared Courchene (Sagkeeng, Manitoba) netted the first goal by a Railsplitter at the LMU Lacrosse Complex off of a pass from Justin. Courchene struck again with 5:08 remaining in the first period as the Sagkeeng, Manitoba native collected a pass from Dylan Neisler (Detroit, Mich.) and put the Railsplitters in front 2-1.

Lincoln Memorial doubled its 2-1 lead in the final two minutes of the first stanza as both Ronny Paulino (Copiague, N.Y.) and Justin scored. Paulino capitalized at the 1:09 mark off an assist by Adam Golia (Victoria, British Columbia), while Justin netted the first of a quartet of goals with 31 seconds remaining off a brilliantly placed pass by freshman Dallas Jaros (West Bloomfield, Mich.). Lees-McRae's Dane Carney got one of those goals back with 14 ticks left seconds.

The Railsplitters added three more goals in the second quarter and held the Bobcats scoreless over that same span. Justin accounted for two of those three goals, the first coming off an assist by Josh Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.), who set that opportunity in motion with a face-off win. Justin capped LMU's first-half scoring by hauling in a pass from Billy Kopsky (Smithtown, N.Y.) that he fired past Bobcat goalie Jordan Lombardo. Wedged between Justin's two scores, Neisler pounded home an unassisted score at 11:35.

The Railsplitters were even better offensively in the second half, finding the net eight times. Lincoln Memorial tallied four goals in the third quarter to carry an 11-5 edge into the final frame. Justin Stewart (Copiague, N.Y.) scored off a pass from Neisler, Paulino struck via a Kopsky pass, Neisler found Golia for a goal, and Kairos Bodley (Orlando, Fla.) accounted for one of just three unassisted goals for the Railsplitters on the afternoon. Lees McRae's Blaine Stottlar supplied all the damage for the Bobcats in the third as the attacker scored three goals by himself.

Lees-McRae got on the board first in the fourth period, but the Railsplitters ended the game by scoring four unanswered goals. Jusstin Ruffin (Copiague, N.Y.) scored off of a pass from Stewart at 11:14, while Justin posted his fourth goal of the match in unassisted fashion at 8:35. Ruffin scored again two minutes later, and Golia finished off the scoring with a man-up goal at 4:27.

Josh Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.) was a force once again for the Railsplitters, winning 15 of his 20 face-offs and leading all players with 11 ground balls. Justin paced the offense with four goals and an assist, while Neisler and Kopsky contributed three assists apiece. Golia factored in two goals and two assists, while Paulino, Courchene and Ruffin scored two goals each.

Joe Medel (1-1) picked up the win in goal for the Railsplitters, allowing six goals and recorded three saves in nearly 49 minutes between the pipes. In addition to Medel, Chris Smith (Copiague, N.Y.), Jeffrey Handman (Tampa, Fla.) and Kyle Deriemacker (Chesterfield, Mich.) all made appearances in net, combining for three saves without allowing a goal.

The Railsplitters dominated nearly every phase of Saturday's contest, accumulating a 32-19 ground ball edge and winning 15 of the 22 face-offs.

The Railsplitters kick off South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, February 21, welcoming the Wingate Bulldogs to the LMU Lacrosse Complex for a 3 p.m. match.
